Pros

Hartford Life is very supportive of the work life balance. It allows telecommuting and flexible schedules. Most of the people working there are very friendly. Leadership does a good job of trying to keep employees informed on prevalent issues in the market. The pay scale seems fair compared to other insurance companies in the area.

Cons

There are not many opportunities for advancement in the field office I worked at. I don't believe this is an issue at the main office. As with most large companies it is possible to post internally for jobs at different locations. Unfortunately, relocation was not a feasible option for me.

Pros

None - I would not recommend working at Hartford - unless they were the only ones hiring. They do not treat their people with respect, pay is low and management at the local level is incompetent. There is no "big picture" being expressed to the front line employees - so who knew what was going on with home office?

Cons

The local management seemed overall incompetent. It was very apparent that local senior management did not understand the needs of the employees. They did not know how to boost moral or keep good employees. I was there 5 months and in that time, over 20 employees left, I was the 21st. That is a LOT of turnover in a 60-70 person claims operation in a 5 month period. I heard that after I left, it did not get better - a lot more people have left or been "forced out." They do NOT pay competitively to the industry. WIth my experience and knowledge - they could not pay me comparable to what I was making at my prior company, due to it "not being fair" to other employees who were currently there. How do they expect to keep good talent by compromising pay? I did change companies due to personal issues that led me to Rancho Cordova, CA.

Pros

One of best reasons for working at the Hartford is that they are really good at hiring recent college grads. In a time period of my job search when the best offers I was receiving were from the Gap or the Body Shop, this was a foot in the door at a Fortune 100 company. I think overall, the company is large enough and stable enough that it is worth taking the time to get acquainted with the products is helpful, because almost every other position in the company builds upon what you've learned. I may have a job being on the phones all day, but I have my Series 6 and will hopefully be moving within the company at some point.

Cons

What I became the most frustrated with working for the Hartford is the lack of organization and specifying objectives when it comes to job descriptions. When I first began at the Hartford, I was told that after being there for a year people are usually promoted and that there was no formal process. The year after I started, they suddenly were coming up with a more defined process for promotion and since it was so "new" they weren't promoting people like they were before. The objectives are not defined any clearer than they were before and it is still up to the discretion of a bosses' boss.
