High skill requirements terrible compensation

Pros

Housing is sometimes provided at little to no cost. Making business purchases is easy with minimal paperwork.

Cons

They have high level requirements for education, job trainings, and certifications. The stewardship staff have extremely low unfair compensation for the required skills. The job stability is terrible, most field technicians have to relocate on 6 month intervals to maintain year round work. They advertise career advancement but do not follow through, the management staff usually offers a single course annually at a wildfire academy, and does not keep up with position task books and certifications, this means they can continue to pay you less for the high level skill work you perform. Work life balance is terrible and fire management staff will often work 60- 70 hrs in a week. The company retirement vestment has a 3 year minimum so most of the field staff will not survive the unbearable working conditions and stagnant career developement long enough to become vested. The executive and administrative staff are compensated far better than the field staff.

Able to raise children, flexible work schedules & opportunity to work remotely.

Cons

Micro aggressions, managers need real diversity training and accountability for their treatment of staff. White women think they are liberal but actually are the problem with diversity. Management is aware of issues with managers but don’t do anything. HR is a joke and is only there to protect the company. As long as you’re “nice” you'll be successful, ability to actually do your job is not valued. No career advancement & if you appear capable more work is assigned to you where those not capable skate by doing minimal work.

Living Our Values Is All Talk, No Action

TNC has a great mission, and it feels good to further that mission. Most of the people in the ranks of regular employees are great to work with and really care about their work. The benefits and leave policies are good and they talk a good talk about treating staff well.

Cons

Leadership has been poor and unstable over the almost ten years that I have worked at TNC. Leaders come and go and are usually hired from outside and do not understand or value the institutional knowledge of longtime employees. Good performance is often rewarded with additional responsibilities to the point of overloading people, and the wrong people are often rewarded with promotions to leadership. The recent Living Our Values initiative to improve workplace culture aims to deal with leadership lack of accountability and poor management at all levels, but nothing has improved in the Marketing Division.
