Pros

Important mission-driven work, great colleagues, understanding and flexible managers

Cons

Workload is too high and staff/resources are too low...which seems inexcusable given the amount of money this organization gets, but speaks to leaders demanding too much and not prioritizing

Thank you for taking the time to share your feedback. TNC has been sharpening it’s focus on the operations of our organization and assessing areas for improvement. We appreciate the value you see in our flexible workplace policies as that is very important to us. Leadership has recognized that managing workloads has becoming difficult during these challenging times. We’ve recently launching our Operational Excellence Initiative to address capacity challenges and define a shared vision. Please contact us at recruiting@tnc.org to learn more about this new initiative.

Pros

I've been at TNC for almost three months and couldn't be happier. Before TNC, I worked at a large federal agency and very small environmental nonprofit. TNC blends the pros of both of those scales without many of the cons. As a large, well-funded organization, TNC can invest in the long view and has resources (financial and human) to solve persistent, tricky environmental problems. As a non-profit, it's not constrained by near as much bureaucracy and admin law that other institutions of it's scale are (like a large federal or state agency). Like a small nonprofit, it can be much more nimble to respond to changing environments (ecological and regulatory). There are so many resources for professional and personal development--runs the gamut from technical trainings to free meditation apps. I feel like my team really wants to see me be my very best and is happy to invest in my development. Plus, the people are wicked smart and deeply care about their work and each other. I've never been so excited about my career!

Cons

It's a big organization with Standard Operating Procedures for everything. There's a ton to learn, especially as you get started. But generally, everyone else has been through it, too and is very understanding as you trek up the steep learning curve.

Yay! I'm so happy to hear that you love working for TNC! We take our employee experience very seriously, and it's wonderful that you feel so excited about your career! It's true that our SOP's can be lengthy, but, the purpose behind them is important. I hope that the learning curve hasn't been too steep! I've been here for 9 years and am still learning. :) If you'd like to chat further, please feel free to contact me at recruiting@tnc.org.

Pros

Fantastic work/life balance, great pay and benefits that go beyond (but include) the usual, meaningful work, cross-cultural connections, professional development, local and global reach

Cons

Somewhat of a large bureaucracy, state chapters can be a little silo'd from the World Office, good work ongoing but still very much to be done in respect to diversity/equity/inclusion.
