Too Cult-like

Pros

Love them as a consumer. For online retail, it simply doesn't get any better. Smart and successful CEO/CFO.

Cons

Weird, cult-like culture. Too much effort put into "rah-rah" and not enough into genuine quality/care for employees. Hard-pressed to find anyone outside the call center much over 40. Another company that thinks they are out of the box but are so far inside the box they can't even seen the corners.

The real story of Zappos

Pros

Great benefits, fabulous people working there

Cons

Very different than what you read about. Core Values are for media only. Getting too big for their own good. Lost the meaning of what they started to be and role over the hard working employees to keep up the image.

Pros

Free Medical Insurance, Rewards beyond rewards for good work, parties, free food! This place I must say really takes care of its people. Everyone is treated with respect, they are not big on company titles which you can't help but to appreciate, and the positive energy within the place is like none other. For the most part customers are always happy, with the exception of a few but what company doesn't have it's not so nice customers? Lastly, training class was probably the best I've had with any job, they set the bar for training without question! I made a lot of lasting friendships, and dang near cried when it was all over. Good times, to say the least...

Cons

Culture. Probably the #1 reason you will get let go, or fired. Many from my training class were shown the door based on this, and a few that I recommended for hire were shown the door due to this. Now I understand that once you have a good and positive work environment going that you will do any and everything to protect it. Who wants a kill-joy messing with the good team spirit afterall?! But I saw in my short stint with the company that they had taken that concept all too far at times. In my opinion it started to look like it wasnt that those individuals lacked culture, it was that either a lead didnt like them or someone else had something against them. I've witnessed this sad truth with my own two eyes. 'Guy didnt like girl who liked him, so girl drops dime in someone elses ear, and the person who received the dime arranges to get that guy gone' sad but true story! They do very little to pull people to the side if they see someone being out of culture, and instead of talking to that person as a simple warning before giving them the chopping block... they just chop them, and majority of the time its over minor, petty stuff. You walk on pretty egg shells everyday, big brother is always watching you, but so many are quick to forget that when everyone is smiling and waving in your face. Dont get me wrong, a good 85% of the smiling and waving is geniune, and the other 15% is just suspect if you ask me. I learned to never let my right hand see what the left was doing, and be cordial with everyone. That doesnt mean that you have to be "EVERYBODY'S" bestfriend however. If you take that much advice and run with it, you'll have a success stay here if you choose. Though I wish people kept their politeness consistent daily, and what I mean by this...if Ashley says "hi, how are you?" on Monday, then when you see her again on Friday, she should still aknowledge how you're doing and not walk past like she dont see you, but this wasnt always the case... I'm with another company now by choice, I became burnt out on the phones from the job before this one where I also worked on the phones (sigh). So I sought out admin/clerical work with another major company. This isnt the worst call center, certainly the better that I've worked in, but regardless of how many sweet customers you talk to it gets old for anyone! I personally just desired more for myself, nothing against the co.
