Pros

Good management structure until 2-3 years ago. Competetive pay for the most part.

Cons

Like a lot of places, they want more from you than you can handle. The workload is unreasonable. Mngt seems to say whatever it takes to make them comfortable at the moment regardless of the facts. A lot of "own the message" while you shovel this BS down to your subordinates.... type of stuff. A lot of turnover during the past two years particularly in the O&G group but it's starting to occur within the other groups as well. Most folks are simply leaving because they're getting better offers but some have seemingly been pushed out after a member of upper management took a disliking to them. At least that's the word from a couple of the folks that recently "left". It's discouraging and disheartening.

Pros

Great benefits! (401K, Health, Dental, Pension, Paid Time Off); I as impressed to see how generous the company is at investing in charitable organizations such as United Way, Habitat for Humanity, and Jr. Achievement to name a few. Employee participation is highly encouraged.

Cons

Many of the positive company reviews for Travelers are from employees located in Headquarters - Hartford, Ct. However, the Houston office is nothing to be desired. At many levels, management has turned a blind eye to the high work load and poor morale that hovers over this department. As a result, turnover is excessive!! Seventeen employees have left the company (from this department alone) since January 2013. When employees leave, their work load is distributed (unevenly) to the remaining employees, most of whom have been with the company less than a year. Training sucks! If you ask 3 different people the same question you will get 3 completely different answers. I won't bother getting into the office politics but just know that it is a bit extreme in the Houston office.

Pros

The Travelers has a great history and an excellent CEO in Jay Fishman. His "C" level managers are also very effective. The company is well positioned financially.

Cons

- Promotions are made based on image vs. what you know. Junior people are promoted to senior levels with minimal experience while folks with superior skills, experience and track records are overlooked. - You'll need a "Mommy" or "Daddy" in senior management to coordinate your career for you. Your individuality, initiative, drive and style will get you nowhere, you'll have to emulate theirs. - More than once since working there I've woken up to discover the "Management Gods" had decided a new, ill defined role would be suit me better than the one I had. Career plan? Yeah, right. - Hartford is a dead city. A one mile walk in any direction from the downtown office threatens bodily harm. - "That's Travelers," is an oft heard refrain used to describe the place's heavily bureaucratic, hierarchical and political way of life. It means associates have accepted this as their "fate," never a good sign. - Roles are fragmented and compartmentalized until nobody owns anything. Don't expect to act independently, expect to work through layers of bureaucracy and personality to achieve modest goals.
