The cons could go on and on, so I’m going to do my best to summarize this briefly.
Let’s start with management/leadership.
Like most businesses, the success (or lack thereof it in TrustedSite’s case) starts at the top. TrustedSite’s CEO is not only out of touch with the modern landscape for their customers/prospects/employees but also comes off as a narcissist who is completely opposed to any form of feedback or suggestion that could potentially help his fledgling business. He has made a point to promote employees who are quintessential “yes men” and are clearly terrified of second guessing any decision he makes. Those that he’s placed in positions of leadership are not only under qualified, but are also the only current employees with a tenure longer than 1 year.
Now to the product.
TrustedSite has 2 products which they sell - website certification (they refer to as trustmarks) and external vulnerability scanning. The CEO has explicitly told his employees during meetings that it’s a waste of time trying to sell scanning and that the “real money” is in selling the Trustmark. The reason for this is that there is a fixed price for scanning and clear cut ROI for that type of product. On the contrary, there is no method to measure the ROI of website certification and TrustedSite simply prices this service with the concept that these trustmark’s (or stickers) will boost an e-commerce sites conversions by 10%. They train their employees to pitch the product in this manner and hope that the businesses they are trying to sell into are incompetent enough to not A/B test the solution.
When a company does decide to A/B test to justify the huge cost, they inevitably discover that it usually makes no difference whether they have the sticker or not (hence, little to no ROI). As soon as any company informs Trustedsite of the results of their test, the management has advised its salespeople to accuse the prospect/or company of running the test incorrectly. Calling this a shady business model is an understatement and really should be something that they’re embarrassed about.
Both of these topics which I discussed are very high level responses. There are many other issues which I didn’t cover that are also troubling (so much so that it’s actually comical), but I simply don’t have enough time to go into all the detail.
I strongly suggest not joining TrustedSite.
