Pros

The product is great, the company is going in the right direction, customers are happy, CEO is cool, great stock and draw for sales reps

Cons

Make sure to ask the right questions during your interview - i.e. territories, realistic quotas, fair teams, management style, culture, realistic OTE, how many reps hit quota (off ramp)? Territories are not equal and the ones that are left are not good. Regardless, you'll have the same quota as everyone around you. Also, they hardly train you so don't expect to know what you're talking about for at least 8-12 months. You'll also sign a new comp plan every quarter and won't get paid for at least 45 days after the quarter, probably even longer. The comp plan also might not come out until the week before the quarter ends so you may have no idea how you're actually getting paid the entire time. If you have issues about anything and bring it to HR, it won't accomplish anything.

Thank you for your review. We have been working hard to make changes and enhancements to our comp plans, to communicate them efficiently and effectively and ensure that our plans are transparent and motivating. We have also been seeking feedback on on-boarding and enablement programs to ensure we are supporting our sales team to become as product and process knowledgeable as quickly as possible. I can also assure you that all feedback and issues brought to the People team are reviewed, discussed and assessed with the right team to help improve a situation.

Pros

Decent product with name recognition with an impressive list of customers.

Cons

OMG where do I start? Twilio is an awful place to work as a salesperson. They have been having a sales hiring surge over the last year after the new COO came to Twilio from Salesforce. He is trying to make Twilio into Salesforce's image and is making it a terrible sales culture. So much change in territories and comp plans that it was impossible to build a pipeline. The comp plan is so hard to understand that reps just give up trying to figure it out. (30 pages long) Twilio pays comp 4 times a year. 45 days after the end of the quarter. And when they do pay comp it is usually wrong. There are constant battles between sales, operations and legal. The processes are so arduous to follow and they are constantly changing. And you better watch out if you want anything done quickly. The legal and operations teams have no sense of urgency. and if you do need something done outside of the process they will penalize you for it . There are so many cliques at Twilio that if you are not in the "cool crowd" then you are isolated and ignored. Favoritism is rampant. Reps who are favored get all the good leads and opportunities. Executive sales leadership is the worst I have ever experienced. They do not value salespeople who color outside the lines and if you upset the wrong person you get fired for some trumped up reason. If you don't fit into their sales model then they find ways to make you exit the company. Cutting territories, moving people around and reassigning accounts and pipeline. If you have a problem with management don't go to HR. All they do is tell your manager what you said. Bottom line-Twilio is a horrible place to work for salespeople.

We appreciate you taking the time to write this review, and of course, wish you had a different experience. We have experienced tremendous growth and change on the Sales side, and recognize that a number of our Sales Ops processes needed to change to meet the needs of a growing Sales team. The Sales Op team has expanded considerably and are dedicated to easing the stress on the systems and processes and have made good progress. The People team and your HRBP is a safe place to bring forward any concerns along with your leadership team. There are some circumstances where an HRBP is obligated to bring forward concerns or experiences and these would be discussed, but otherwise these resources are there for Twilions to access to assist in anyway they can be helpful. Thank you for your feedback, and we wish you well in your new endeavors.

The good days of Twilio are behind it

Pros

Twilio is (was?) full of talented employees, who were creative thinkers, builders, and teammates. Unfortunately, the enthusiasm of many of these employees drained over the last year in light of faltering leadership (see cons). Work/life balance was fantastic, with remote work opportunities and unlimited PTO.

Cons

Management at all levels is a disaster. The leadership changes direction so regularly that it is difficult for teams to achieve their goals. Not only is this frustrating, but over time the cumulative impact of projects repeatedly being discarded is a huge hit to morale. Team and departmental management lacked the skills needed to motivate and grow their employees; in my 2 years at Twilio I was rarely provided with any practical leadership or professional development opportunities despite asking for them. Despite their stated commitment to diversity and inclusion, my experience was that men were regularly favored over women in terms of promotions, leadership opportunities, stretch assignments, and access to their skip-level managers. The majority of their stated anti-racist layoffs, at least on my team, consisted of women, people of color, and people with disabilities. It is my opinion that the DEI team that was established is just for optics; my team regularly interacted with them and they had a reputation for using intimidation and bullying tactics to achieve their goals - completely counteractive to how a DEI team should behave.
