Pros

If you want an opportunity to work in a stunningly beautiful campus and city, this is the place to do it. Supportive friendly co-workers and a great benefits package where just some of the things that led to a very pleasurable working experience here. The quirks of the Academic environment might not suit everyone, but for me provided strong positives to the job. I was in IT and its much more satisfying to be moving the agenda of the University forward then increasing efficiency of some multi-billionaires widget process by .3%.

Cons

The pay is lower then the private sector. Mobility can be somewhat limited unless you scout around for advancement in other departments. Santa Barbara is more or less "small town" life (in California terms heh), might not be everyones thing.

Pros

Campus learning assisted services, or CLAS for short, is a great place to spend a few hours a week earning money while working through college. Also, it is one of the higher paying jobs on the UCSB campus. The management works well around your schedule (if you are insistent about it). Overall it is a great place to start.

Cons

As a tutor, you are pretty much left to your own devices. Other than a initial training session, there is little to no additional development. It really is up to you.

Pros

Depends ( I can only speak for IT Staff, academic positions are another area I cannot address). If you're looking for a reliable job and want benefits it's the place for you. Merit is not really rewarded because virtually everyone gets the same increase regardless of performance. The exceptional are ignored (not to say I was exceptional but I saw some who were). Only the really really terrible are ever disciplined/fired.

Cons

It's Political!!! The Professors run the campus (as they should) and look out for their salaries and increases before anyone else. Increase in pay typically requires accepting a job at a different department. Be prepared for very very little growth in a job unless you are re-hired in another department.
