Pros

Great coworkers and peers. The work is important. No two days are ever the same.

Cons

Management does not care about journalism, the first amendment or the staff. The company is all about making a buck. It has no class what so ever. The CEO babbles about whatever the last management book he read but did not understand has no original thoughts of his own. The company is in reality run by a CFO who has never step foot anywhere but Washington DC or Wall street and has no clue what journalism means. They hire people that look good, talk good, but are clueless. Anyone who cares about what journalism is supposed to be about is crushed or brushed aside. There is no hope. Look elsewhere for employment or suffer the same fate as us fools who at one time thought the company actually cared.

Pros

If you are lucky enough to work for one of the good publishers you will be given a lot of support and even more autonomy.

Cons

It is a cespool of incompetence at many locations and many levels. The Peter Principle is very much at work and it is oftentimes virtually impossible to understand how or why certain people are allowed to thrive given their performance while others, of significantly more skill, are treated incredibly poorly.
