Pros

The people believe in what they do. The volunteers all want to be there.

Cons

Salaries and titles are based on company donations. Stopped allowing cash donations from patrons which lowered total overall donations.

Pros

Working at the USO has its benefits. The flexible hours are a plus, and it’s refreshing to have a role that doesn’t keep you tied to a desk. There’s a lot of movement and interaction with people, and the opportunity to serve the community can be genuinely rewarding.

Cons

However, there are significant downsides. The USO seems to favor hiring spouses over prior military personnel, which sometimes leads to a lack of firsthand military understanding among staff. There’s also a noticeable level of unproductive discussions and opinions that seem to take precedence over simply getting the job done. Management often relies on platitudes and lengthy meetings that don’t yield real results, which can feel like wasted time. High turnover rates add to this instability, making it difficult to maintain consistent team momentum.
