Pros

I came to work for Ulta because of it's store/salon concept and product lines. The company was growing and the pay was in line.

Cons

The number one reason I hated my time at Ulta was the district manager. She has no idea how to talk to employees or do her job. It is never ok to yell at your employee in front of other employees AND customers! There was no support on her part. If you had a question she would make you feel terrible for not knowing and tell you to ask someone else. Then that manager would not know and you would be lucky to ever find the answer. This leads her staff of GMs to think she has no idea, but she can't even own up to it and simply say, "I am unsure" and help you find the answer. The open door policy at Ulta is a joke! Follow the chain of comand or call HR, then be ready for full on retaliation! You might as well hand over your keys and walk out because your life will be hell until you do. Does not matter that you are meeting your key sales goals. Meeting payroll even though you do not have the hours to run your store. If you don't make your payroll you have to work 6 or even 7 days a week to make it up! And forget ever having 2 days off together because the DM will not let you unless you request it and she feels like approving it. The same can be said for holidays and vaction. This goes way beyond the norm even for retail! This lady is full on nuts! It was difficult to keep good employees! My true dissapointment with Ulta was the open door policy. It was not followed by the company because if it had been things would have improved on the issue of the DM. I would have hoped that she for be let go, but at least retrained and followed up on! I tried to stick it out because it was my job, but she made it impossible to do my job. There is also a huge issue with communication with Ulta. Policy (even with new manuels and such) is unclear.

Pros

The coworkers are delightful and the make up is great. Thats all I can say about Ulta so Ill save the other comments for below!

Cons

Well- if you want a promotion for the general manager position that your already doing for over a year total - your not gonna get it ( and you have been employed with Ulta for almost 4 yrs). Why? because ulta likes to hire external " friends " to fill these positions. What does Ulta pay for a four year degree and knowledge? The same amount that Race trac gas station pays their cashiers. If Corporate would get their heads out of the clouds and the president pay attention to employees- then Ulta would benefit by better business. Ulta would rather have "bodies" in the store as long as they only get 16 hours vs hard working dependable employees. And just some advice for District managers, when a MANAGER ask a question directly to you via email- DONT return a phone call and discuss managerial business with a temporary key holder while the manager that initiated the question is sitting right there and the DM does not even ask to speak to that person. Can you imagine the unprofessionalism? Whew- I could go on but then one might think im just an unhappy bitter employee. HAHA your right!!!

Pros

You will receive a 25% discount on products and 50% discount on salon services. A few times a year, the discount can be as high as 40% off of products and 60% off of salon services.

Cons

Employees in managerial type roles who have no knowledge of cosmetics and lack customer service/people skills. Hours are cut so drastically there are not enough employees to assist customers. This is frustrating for both the customers and employees. Lack of training for employees. Lack of incentives for employees other than employee discount. The pay is very low. Salon services are not paid for at the salon. So the customer has to come and wait in line behind all the retail customers. If the customer wants to add a tip to their charge, a manager has to approve it first. This causes the customer to be inconvenienced as they have to wait around for a manager to come approve their tip.
