Pros

They supply most of your tools

Cons

The tools they supply are chi, not a lot of education for corprate store, you belong to Ulta and must work the floor if asked (not to mention CONSTANT interruption from customers asking advise while you are with a client) , at most locations you are answering the phone (during client process), no privacy, VERY cramped stations...the list goes on! Oh and they will take your clientele so keep records as best you can!

Pros

Employee discount, Gratis, Customer interaction, gain product knowledge, and salon discounts

Cons

They aren't very flexible with your schedule, too many "cliques" with mgmt, most mgmt show favoritism, if mgmt decides they don't like you they will cut your hrs w/o telling you why, with hopes that you will quit. The store stays short staffed ALL of the time but Ulta expects you to perform as if you are superman.....like running the registers, color matching guests, cleaning, stocking all at the same time. Good luck with that, it will not happen. You get reprimanded when it doesn't and so now you have performance issues through no fault of your own. If you decide to be a whistle blower or file a complaint, it's best you start looking for another job immediately. They will make your life miserable. They say no retaliation will happen if you do, that's not true. Your hrs get cut more, you get stares from the mgmt team, they have even gone as far as talking other employees to write false statements about people to get rid of them in exchange for more hours. It's nearly impossible to advance in mgmt, if that's what you want to do if you survive the 4 to 15 hrs a week and ZERO training. It's nearly impossible to use any sick time or vacation time that you have accrued b/c they stay at minimum staffing regularly. The store never gets cleaned the way it should because most of the time it's One Mgr and One Associate in the store, especially in the evenings. Ulta is very unrealistic in their expectations for their managers to complete their DOR's (division of responsibilities) before a certain time when they are minimally staffed. Employees are not valued like they should be. There is no consistency within the stores, every store does things differently. So if you ever transfer to another store, good luck. They have 2 different types of rewards programs for the customers and it makes things difficult for the employees and the customer. Expect to get yelled at and cussed out by the customer b/c your store doesn't let them spend their points like the other stores do...b/c your store system isn't set up that way. The only thing they care about is their customer survey scores, in which half the time the good ones that they get, the employees are filling them out. The bad ones, are mostly true. Theft is ridiculous there. Especially in fragrance.

Pros

Working with makeup, and gratis!

Cons

Let me just start out saying that I don't know if all the stores are ran so horribly or if its just mine. I worked for 2 of Ulta's competitors, 1 being their biggest competitor for almost 2 years, and Ulta is by far the most inferior...and that's probably an understatement. I don't even know where to begin--the pay is awful; they do not spend the time to train you; they have no hygiene standards when it comes to putting make up on people or the brushes they use; the higher-ups think its perfectly appropriate to schedule an adult, who has no other job or school, for 4-5 hour shifts because they don't think employees will work as hard if they are any longer; management sits in the back room doing nothing but watching all the employees on camera; you will go NOWHERE career-wise. Nobody in the beauty industry cares about Ulta because they do not train and create make up artists there, and no one cares that you have worked with a bunch of products found at Walmart or Target. Maybe it is just my store, but I know that this store has been like that for years and the fact that none of the higher-ups have ever done anything about any of this says a lot about the company.
