Unity reviews about "upper management"

- Ramping up on big teams like this during COVID-19 is harder than on smaller teams still one can learn to pull information and meet people (again, teams/people are very approachable via Slack/Zoom in chats and video calls)

Struggling from many years of poor leadership and low accountability. Very poor engineering culture. Leadership does not understand how to evaluate technical skills or to incentivize the right engineering investments, too few pure technical people in upper management.

The path to getting a promotion is too formulaic. While great people get promoted who deserve it, great people who make a difference in less obvious ways (participating in ERG groups, contributing to the culture, always being available to help and mentor others and make sure they are helping us be 'in it together' ) rarely get recognized or rewarded for that. Managers need a lot more training. And everyone should get at least a week of training on the unity product that makes sense to their job, within their first 6 months and perhaps every 6 months thereafter.

Offers are slightly less competitive than the market. I think they rely on the cachet of working in the games industry to have people overlook mediocre pay structure. The perks like healthcare, gym reimbursement etc are actually very good, but they will hem and haw about signing bonuses, pay bumps, etc. There is no annual cash bonus. They do refresh RSUs for certain positions but it’s hard to tell their value until the IPO happens. The sentiment I’ve heard is that it’s hard to advance your compensation unless you get promoted. Some teams are plagued with disorganization and poor leadership. My team is very good because my manager is on top of communication and setting expectations, but I know teams where no one knows what the product requirements are, or even when deadlines are, because their manager is not explicit in either so they are scrambling to gather their information themselves. IMO it’s no worse than a lot of companies and startups ive been in, but I definitely sense how frustrated they are and it can kill morale. Good news is that the manager was disciplined so it seems like the company takes it seriously.

- Individual Contributors (developers) are not respected. - Mushroom management. - No longer a gaming / game engine company. - Upper management lacks competence. - Upper management cannot ever admit fault and they lie and twist reality in a vain effort to cover things up.

- Salary under market value due to part of the package being in equity - Questionable upper management decisions - Company values are sometimes valued more than the skills for the position

Middle management is clique and can be toxic if they are displeased, there is no room for growth as new positions do not come up in this depertment.

1. Few teams/ team members do not like each other, you will feel like fighting a battle just to get some work done. 2. Too frequent changes in upper management has created chaos with no clear direction about the product. 3. Appraisal process is inconsistent. 4. Recruiter might lie about pre ipo stock value, Unity took a hefty round of funding last year, stock has been diluted significantly. 5. Unity has its own way of making work more stressful, you will feel like a lot is on stake and you will be judged.
