Pros

The students who care. Campus diversity (international)

Cons

$8.2 million operating loss last year. Debt downgrade to junk status with negative outlook. Militaristic, authoritarian leadership. Ruling through fear and firing or driving off anyone who might question the direction of the university. Board leadership that went from being asleep at the wheel as the university burned through millions in reserves through construction cost over-runs, non-existent budgeting, and ridiculous tuition discounting to micromanaging and ultimately shutting out all stakeholders from the ultimate decision in the presidential search process. Many new members of executive team appointed by presidential fiat. Zero attempt at shared governance. Removed due process rights of faculty members. Staff and faculty morale is awful. Student morale at Fayette is not much better due to a 10% bump in tuition and fees. Next year's budget balanced by assuming that 10% tuition and fee increase would combine with an almost 10% increase in Fayette enrollments.

Pros

The institution really tries to keep afloat; it is in a very small, rural community which might have its advantages for individuals who are drawn to this context.

Cons

Extremely micromanaged, run by people who do not have experience in other institutions or states. Some employees even describe the work place as very toxic. Not much room for development. It's their way or the highway. The institution has had an impressive amount of faculty members who have quit.

Don’t ignore the red flags!

Pros

Leaving UIU was the best day of my life.

Cons

If you’re looking for a job that will make you sad, this is the place for you! Some Vice Presidents make over $100k while running the school into the ground. This place is not a family, it’s a clique. If you are tight with the right peeps, you’re good. If not, good luck getting a raise or promotion. Staff turnover is high and morale is low. I should have listened to my gut. Wasted time at this dead end. I ignored the red flags, but let my mistake be a lesson!
