Poorly managed engineering

Pros

The pay was good. The perks were good.

Cons

Bad engineering culture. More so about the process and productivity versus the actual people and personalities. However, there was a definite sense of who they value and who they don't. Very poor management. My perspective was limited to Senior Managers and Directors. Seems almost as if many never held positions of that level. Secret room planning and technical strategy that hardly ever made it down to the individual contributors. The IC input was more of a checkbox. Very narrow focused when implementing new tooling and technologies. Maybe half the use cases were ever even taken into consideration. Extremely hard to be productive in Upstart Engineering specifically the Platform division. Teams simply could not own end to end and function autonomously due to Silos and nested Silos within the organization structure.

Pros

Work from home, decent benefits

Cons

Lay offs, your role will constantly change to "fit business needs" and become something so far from what you started with, customer service employees are clearly just a dollar sign.

Pros

Remote work Good benefits (mostly) Decent pay

Cons

Operations is the worst department to work in, many of the jobs are being outsourced, promotions go to external hires, and there's a lack of development for existing employees. You get 2 weeks of vacation while the rest of the company has unlimited PTO. Overall company culture has disappeared in the past year.
