Pros

I worked with some of the smartest people I've ever met. I loved my coworkers and cross-functional team members.

Cons

Leadership was terrible. Would regularly be yelled at by the CEO during town halls. If something wasn't working, instead of finding a solution and improving process, the company would fire and hire. Absolutely ZERO employee appreciation.

We appreciate your feedback on both the pros and cons of working at Uptake. We take this input seriously. We are so glad you have had the opportunity to work with some pretty smart individuals. We count on every one of our people to guide the direction of and build Uptake's future. We encourage employees to provide feedback in the form of anonymous pulse surveys, an ethics line, or simply reaching out to the People Team. We would have welcomed the opportunity to take corrective action with the behavior you mentioned in Town Halls, but it is difficult to respond without additional context. You can still contact the ethics line to file a report: 844-296-1317. We are disappointed to hear that you felt there was zero employee appreciation because we have deliberately made sure that wasn't the case. We rolled out a recognition platform last year for managers and employees to use, and the usage has been consistent by our managers to give recognition at over 85%. In addition to our recognition program to thank employees for all their hard work throughout the year; for the past three years, we have closed our office and given employees two weeks off for the Christmas and New Year holiday season, along with $150 recognition points that can be used to purchase gift cards to any place of their choosing. We are always trying to boost employee morale and engagement to show our care and concern for our employees with events like our monthly webinars, regularly providing resources surrounding mental health and general well-being. Our re-power hour, unlimited PTO, and flexible working hours are specifically designed to give Uptakers the work-life balance they need to be successful in their personal and professional experiences.

Pros

Compensation and work/life balance were fine

Cons

I'm trying not to speculate too much, but the overall impression I got is of a tired company that is gradually winding down. With its last funding round being Series D over 5 years ago, things obviously haven't panned out the way people have hoped. That may be the reason why I witnessed a lot of hostile behavior and conniving politics, as well as two layoffs within a few months. Leadership was mostly absent and uninspiring. The company also does not seem fundamentally agile, so naturally, Scrum rituals were mostly painful chores, standups were status reports and so on. Deadlines were decided by product/sales leaders without regard for developer estimates. The tech stack is fine for their purposes but doesn't scale well and is nothing exciting. It seemed like data science was where most of the value was being created, and they had some solid contributors.

We appreciate your feedback on both the pros and cons of working at Uptake. Thank you for sharing your experience on our compensation structure and our work/life balance; we continue to find ways to remain competitive in the market. We are disappointed to hear about your negative experience of leadership being absent and uninspiring. Our leadership team has made tremendous strides in providing transparency and visibility within our organization. One of the things we are most proud of is Kayne’s CEO Updates that are done every Monday morning to the entire company; in addition, we have continued the cadence of our monthly All Hands. We understand confusion always comes with tough business decisions and appreciate your candor. It has not been easy, but Uptake made tough calls in places we had to in order for the organization to continue building a company with a mission to serve our customers and industries around the world. We’ve made very deliberate staffing decisions, including making several hires across the business, to align with the direction we’re heading in. The added focus, combined with having the right talent in place, puts us in a strong position to continue to grow and gain market share. We’re proud of the recent momentum of our Uptake Fleet product. With Uptake Fleet's predictive technology, our customers can avoid costly breakdowns and extend the life of their vehicles!
