Pros

Lessons are mapped out ahead of time

Cons

Interview takes a few weeks; I did not understand that the peak hours of teaching (6-10 pm) meant in Bejing time, so you're teaching extrememly early/late (depending on when you normally sleep). I thought I was going to be reimbursed $50 for class supplies (like a whiteboard and puppets and other props I bought) but this did not happen; I got extremely sick and had to cancel classes for 2 days, and because of their bizarre attendance policy (2 classes counts as one cancellation, so if you've got 6 classes in one day and have to cancel them all, I think that counts as 3 cancellations, and you're allowed 6 total per 6 month contract period) I got money taken away from classes I'd already taught. Bonuses are also advertised in a misleading way. You have to work like 30 slots to earn a bonus that seems like you'll get as long as you show up and teach the class, no matter how many you have. In the first month I've taught maybe 6 classes. I haven't had a class booked since I got sick two weeks ago. Trial classes, which made up like 5/6 of the classes I had, pay you $4 for 25 minutes. If you never have an emergency or get sick, I guess you'd probably do ok, but for me, I thought I'd be working pretty steadily but I have no work at all after getting sick. I am an asset for this company, yet they absolutely took advantage of me for getting sick.

VIPKid Response

VIPKID's peak hours of teaching are based on our students' (who live in China) peak time availability, so it is a bit odd if you live in North America, but this information is mentioned in several places during the application process. We are working on our cancellation policies to meet the needs of our teachers and the expectations of parents and students. VIPKID understands that there are circumstances beyond people's control, so cancellations are allowed. As always, we are growing and improving. Thank you for your feedback!

Pros

The management team is great and provide many helpful training videos that we can access any time we need a refresher. They offer many bonus incentives on top of our base pay. They do have some strict rules on teachers but they are to the benefit of the children and the teachers- like leaving our feedback for the parent and next teacher in timely manner (within 12 hours). If we don't then we don't get paid but really how much does a teacher accurately remember after 12 hours and having taught multiple other students? I never would have imagined I could make so much money while working from home while my children are still sleeping. On top of the base salary they also pay you an extra $1 for each class booked (even if the student is a no show!) and they pay you another $1 for each class taught. So whatever base pay they offer per class (25 minutes each) add $2 for the ones taught and $1 for the ones where the student had an issue. Then add another $2 for short notice classes (when teachers are no shows or have IT problems and you pick up their class). So like this morning I picked up 2 short notice classes so I ended up making $22 for the hour. I highly recommend VIPKID to anyone who is passionate about teaching children and wants to help make a difference in a young person's life.

Cons

The hours can be super early (depending on where you live) or super late. But since you choose your own schedule it makes it not so bad. Sometimes the lessons change on you without any notice. Firemen are nearly impossible to get a hold of unless they want you to pick up a short notice class...
