Pros

I love working from home, and I like being an Independent Contractor. This company provides the tools and resources to help you be successful on their platform once you are hired as a teacher. You have full control of your own schedule, and can teach as much or as little as you would like. If you like teaching kids age 3-16, this is a wonderful opportunity. The company encourages you to have fun with the students, so the classes are usually very fun to teach.

Cons

Since the company is based in China, it is hard to connect with a real live person if you ever have any problems. Mostly it is an automated system using translation software, so the more independent you are at solving problems, the better you will do. Also, you do need to have good working internet and technology at all times. There are penalties you pay if you miss a class because of faulty technology or personal issues. It is also important to note teaching hours are after school and evening Beijing time, which may mean classes for some teachers start around 3am, depending on where you live. The other thing to note is that the company doesn't guarantee teachers any hours. Once you are hired, you are put into their system, but some teacher have a harder time getting booked than others. It is unclear why this is. So some teachers take months (or longer) to build their caseload. And there is no guarantee the work will be steady. Some teachers suddenly have drops in bookings and it is unclear why. So just keep in mind you will probably have to supplement this job with other work also, at least in the beginning.

Pros

I am able to open the timeslots that I am available to teach, and I said this around my brick and mortar school schedule. As things come up that keep me from being at my computer on time I am able to go in and close any schedules that I messed so that I can focus on the students that have already booked to ensure that I am ready for their lesson.

Cons

Do you to the pay change I have had to make myself not spend as much time preparing for lessons which makes some classes harder but my time is valuable.

Pros

Able to work from home and set my own schedule

Cons

The pay is not competitive. 7.50 a class is not enough money for a college graduate with experience. Much less $15.00 and hour.

Pros

Creating my own schedule that meets my busy family life is the greatest benefit. I teach for a few early hours in the morning prior to my children waking up and then I am done for the day. I have loved getting to know some sweet foreign families and their bright children. This has been the perfect job for me!

Cons

I have had to train myself to be an easy morning person. Over time I have adjusted to waking up early to teach classes.

Great job overall

Pros

Flexibility, work from home, one-on-one with students, good base pay for experienced educators, set lessons with “script” to follow and expand from.

Cons

Supplemental pay varies per contract, so I actually earn a bit less money per hour now than when I started 18 months ago due to new pay scale. No great way to change your schedule at the last minute without big consequences to teacher. At the same time, parents will rate you poorly (which in turn affects your bookings) if you teach while sick. No classes scheduled by company, so hours can vary weekly.

Flexible Hours, Low Pay

Pros

There is not prep, grading or creating of materials, beyond printing or downloading props and a background to use while teachings. There is no minimum number of classes required to teach and the schedule is totally flexible. It's been a great gig while I've been traveling and needing a lot of flexibility in my schedule.

Cons

This is my 5th contract and I received a pay DECREASE under the new terms which seems unfair considering I've taught here for 2 years. There is a lack of transparency with new policies and there doesn't seem to be any attempt to retain quality teachers. You have to work very hard to get and retain students and a lot of scheduling seems to be luck of the draw.

Pros

The kids are great, making your own hours, fun, working from home

Cons

I don't understand how people can say it pays well. The people who make good money don't sleep or have a life. With the pay cute I am now making about $18 an hour minus taxes. The job involves writing feedback after each class too. I have been teaching 20 years and have a Masters degree. I get paid $50 an hour to tutor here on the East Coast. I do this because I love it but am close to having to give it up.. The hours have also taken a toll on me. It is hard to cancel classes, You PAY to cancel classes. It is also almost impossible to communicate with families you grow close to and care about.
