Pros

I so enjoy getting to know the patients and the care givers. Its such an honor to care for them as they process their journey. Its an awesome feeling to know you may me the last person they see prior to eternity. I love my job

Cons

I've gone through 7 team managers in the 4 years I've worked here. Vitas needs to pay them more. Something is very wrong.

Pros

Easy part time job for supplemental income, if you are willing to go right along seamlessly with their established protocols and expectations. The RN case managers do 99% of the work; the physician signs off per Medicare requirements.

Cons

Expectation is to adhere to 1) certifications and re-certifications of patient hospice eligibility and strict medication protocols, except on obvious and rare occasions. 2) business first decisions, no different in the hospice for profit industry than in any other corporate medical entity. 3) Physician must pay heed to what referral sources ( where a large chunk of hospice patients live) such as SNF’s and adult living facilities also most care about - profitability. Agree to whatever they ask of the hospice physician in order to lower patient care costs, or risk referrals going to a different hospice agency. Expect significant inherent conflicts of interest. 4). If they call physician with a new admission, physician is expected to stop instantly whatever they are doing at their primary job for 10 -15 minutes. This can happen multiple times a day. They won’t necessarily make this clear during the interview process. Thus the position is better suited for doctors who have some flexibility in their schedule. But if having to keep up with 3-4 patients an hour on their primary clinic’s schedule, then they should think twice, maybe thrice before accepting position. I highly doubt any of the above is relevant only to certain hospice for profit companies; very like its industry wide.

Pros

Great sense of purpose. Meaningful interaction with patients, families, loved ones, and peers. Opportunities to make a difference.

Cons

Many governmental and corporate hoops to jump through that tend to detract from the overall mission.
