Pros

It's reputation as a teaching hospital and research center

Cons

They do not spend money on new equipment, and units that are badly in need of renovation are ignored while they spend millions building new towers.

Pros

Top quality medical center with may opportunities to learn. The Children's Hospital is beautiful and if you want to get outside during your break or at lunch the main campus lawns are only a couple minutes walk and it can really calm a stressful day. Benefits are affordable if you use a VUMC doctor, you will received a copay discount. There is also an employee appointment line where you call and be put at the first available appointment or even worked into a physicians schedule. This helps when you are really sick and need to be treated. They also have an emplyee clinic for acute care.

Cons

Parking is annoying. You will have to pay to park and they will take the money directly from your paycheck. Depending where you park depends how much it will cost. I parked in the 25th Avenue Garage and it cost me $10.40 to park on the roof. There is cheaper parking in the shuttle lot. Either way there are always shuttles to avoid the rain or you can always walk. Not many affordable lunch options unless you go to the Children's Hospital. They have Taco Bell, Subway, Ben & Jerrys and a cafeteria. These places cost a little more than if you were to go outside of the campus but it is convenient. Be prepared to pay with cash if you are going to eat at Taco Bell. The main hospital cafeteria is overpriced in my opinion. Salads are wieghed and a side salad could cost you $5.00. I you want a salad as a meal then you may pay $7-10. Best bet, take you lunch or walk to somewhere off campus.

Pros

Work/Life balance is obviously important to management. I am able to maintain a healthy professional AND personal life while working at Vanderbilt. Having young children, this is especially important to me (the onsite day care is a great help). Additionally, the benefits are better than those of comparable employers.

Cons

Just like an ocean liner or an iceberg, VUMC does not change directions swiftly. Changes come about in very small gradual movements. Navigating the red-tape and political landscape can be frustrating at times.
