Pros

The office has a nice and fun environment, benefits are decent and you get paid bi-weekly, that's honestly about it.

Cons

I worked there for almost three years and looking back on it now, it was like working in a cult. They brainwash you with all of these cool employee activities and fun perks, and you stay because you feel like this means you are valued and somehow you are making a difference, but in reality---management, HR, and execs could care less about you. I am so glad I left. When it comes down to it, they would rather lay off 10-20 people at time-multiple times a year, consistently, than to give up the shiny employee activities, and free t-shirts. I've NEVER worked at a company that has its values so wrong. In theory, their values sound amazing and that is what draws you in, but that's not the reality of working at Volusion. I honestly feel so disappointed and let down. I had so much hope and excitement for my career there and so did many of my colleagues, but ultimately you are just a number in a budget and when it comes down to it they will cut the employee workforce down to the bare bones in order to keep their image of "One of the top places to work" with their cool perks and fun workplace. It's heartbreaking, and I hope they realize the damage this is taking on their brand and remaining workforce. One of the first things I heard when I started working there was about the company history (within the past 5-10 years). I heard how scary the layoffs "used to be" but that it wasn't like that anymore...I wish I would have listened. Some advice if you decide to risk it and take a job there even after reading all of these honest reviews, always keep your resume up to date and continue to keep searching for the next job.

Pros

Great coffee. A few of my coworkers became friends and allies, and working hours rarely went past 40 per week.

Cons

There's not much to share but what's already been said. Highly political and dysfunctional environment -- I don't mean a typical "protect the territory" vibe, but much worse. Senior management has no clue, and the place is rife with favoritism. Depending on the position you're looking at, you can count on being underpaid. Austin is a buyer's market when it comes to tech jobs, so pass on this company for an offer and working environment you can appreciate. The brand(s) is a mess as is the legacy software.

Cons

Re: Sales Dept. Only - If you're here because you're next in line at the revolving door that is Volusion's sales department, this may be worth a read: Don't fall for the show they put on up front. The allure of the game room, snacks, ping pong table and all the cliche "startup perks" will quickly fade. When's the last time you heard about a 17-year-old startup? There reaches a point where "startup" is no longer an exciting badge of pride and hope, but a scarlet letter sign of an organization with confused direction and inability to consistently execute in the market place. Run very much like a call center. Lots of thinking on a small scale. The epitome of passive-aggressiveness. Gossip like nobody's business amongst management. Encourage a culture of promotion via attrition. If you can be a yes man, turn your brain off, do it all with a big turd-eating grin, and outlast your wiser counterparts jumping ship, you will be a manager in no time. The best sales leader here recently left for greener pastures (see the theme). Since I started, there are only a couple people left that were hired before me. The sales contests are comical and appear to be pulled from a Kindergarten lesson plan. Micro-management is the norm with a hyper-focus on call numbers and talk time. Managers listen to your calls while you're on them, and message you DURING the call with your customer, giving you feedback. Have you ever tried to hold a conversation on the phone while reading and responding to another conversation via chat? Let alone a sales call? Oh and on the last day of the month, every month, they hold us hostage during lunch and don't let anyone leave. Why? Because we're not adults in a professional setting, just a little baby sales drones and these hard sell tactics aren't going to close deals themselves... but they bring lunch so it's cool. If you want to feel like you're dropping yourself off at daycare every day when you drive to work, don't have high career goals, and like the taste of kool aid, go ahead and sign that offer letter! This review only pertains to the sales department as I cannot speak accurately about any others. Also, there really are some super peeps that work here. Y'all know who you are.
