I wish I had never accepted their offer of employment

Pros

The only positive thing I could possibly say about this company is one person on my team was pleasent to be around sometimes, and that the office space was very pretty.

Cons

Working for Whoop was the worst experience of my career so far and a huge learning lesson to do better due diligence when deciding on an employer. I felt like in the interview process I was very very transparent with what my capabilities were and work experience was. I went through 5 interviews, 2 assessments and a take home test. After all of this Whoop made it very clear that they wanted me and even offered me a higher salary to sign same day (red flag #1). During the interview process it seemed like a very pleasant place to work and they seemed to love me. Once I joined, however, this was very soon not the case. Many of my coworkers were pretentious and not willing to help new employees adjust to their new position. Not one person in the office was friendly or tried to make me feel welcomed. The work load was unreasonable. I was brought on, given 0 onboarding or orientation to the company, and expected to set-up and orient myself by using a dated google slide deck for 3 hours and then was thrown into my a big project on my first day. I had well over 40 hours of work per week, and had to meet ridiculous expectations with the very little resources and enablement I was given. The director of my team was an extremely rude, unapproachable, and condescending individual who belittles their employees. This says a lot about company culture considering they have been with Whoop for 7+ years, and this same sentiment is shared by much of the leadership based on what I experienced. I constantly felt micro-managed and untrusted by the business which severely hampered my work. I was also barely given access and permissions to the resources I needed to do my job. When working with collaborating with employees who I did not even report to, it felt like they went out of their way to let me know how stupid I was and that nothing I did was up to their standards, and that they could do my job better than me. Lastly, the overall vibe I got was that it was a "boys club" that does not cater to employees who are not straight, white, male, or ivy educated. I felt taken advantage of, and left the company extremely depressed. I have never had a job affect my mental health so negatively the way that working at Whoop did (which is a little ironic considering they are a company in the health fitness and wellness space).

Pros

The people I work directly with are all good people. My direct manager is great. The product has the potential to be excellent once issues and bugs are flushed out, and is still pretty cool even when non-yet-perfect. Insurance is excellent. PTO is okay, however, it differs in this department from the rest of the company which could be improved.

Cons

The workload is enormous. If you are unwilling to work more than 40 hours per week you cannot be successful here. Emails, slack, and other systems are blowing up with notifications one after the other with no downtime for head-down work. 40 hours per week has you quickly falling behind. Leadership asks for feedback and then gaslights when feedback is not all 100% positive. Leadership (that which is continuously changing) is constantly rolling out new initiatives and “roadmaps”, only adding more work without resolving any of the currently open tasks at hand. Nothing has been offloaded, only added. Managers have no stake in anything, making “talking to your manager” about viable concerns virtually pointless. Likewise, being a manager unable to prompt change after feedback is given by reports is disappointing and also feels pointless.

Thank you for taking the time to post a review about your experience at WHOOP. We're happy to hear that you have a good relationship with your Manager. It's also great to hear that you believe in the power of our product. We're sorry to hear that you are struggling with the workload and work/life balance. Please know that we welcome and encourage folks to unplug at night and on the weekends by muting Slack and avoiding checking emails unless absolutely necessary. We also encourage employees to take control over their schedule and block "Focus Time" so we all have dedicated time to be "heads down" on projects that require dedicated and uninterrupted desk time. A great deck outlining Communications Best Practices & Productivity "Hacks" has been circulated that we recommend you review when you have a moment. In 2023, we're looking forward to more focus and strict adherence to achieving our overarching goals and OKRs. It sounds like you may have feedback about how longer-term initiatives are communicated, and we would certainly welcome the opportunity to speak to you about that. Feel free to reach out to us at hr@whoop.com so we can schedule a time to chat further.

Pros

Initially a great company to work for with a lot of energy. Fascinating and cutting-edge research on human health and performance.

Cons

Started to become impossible to advance within the company and turnover rate was very high after that. This left the company with a few disheartened original employees working alongside a slew of new and often poorly-trained individuals.

Thank you for taking the time to write a review. We totally agree that WHOOP is working on cutting-edge human performance research and initiatives. Of course, we are sorry to hear that you did not find long-term growth opportunities here at WHOOP. Our voluntary turnover rate is on-par with what the tech industry sees at-large, but we are always looking to improve. We want WHOOP to be a place where folks can grow their career over time! To that end, we would appreciate your in-depth feedback if you're open to it. Please reach out to hr@whoop.com.
