Thank you for your feedback. WestEd is certainly a professional and interesting place to work, as well as being intellectually stimulating. We are proud of our ability to allow more home-based remote work as appropriate and available. As a non-profit and a quasi-governmental organization, there is some fluctuation year over year in terms of funding and contract renewal, so this may necessitate similar fluctuations in the level of work available. WestEd is in process of considering a work-share program under which programs needing similar work could post availability, and an employee with a similar skill set could potentially take on some of those responsibilities, which we hope will lessen the impact of fluctuations in funding. Our professional development cohort, “PD2” is an excellent opportunity for up and coming leaders to improve. All programs also have the opportunity to send employees for external professional development activities if funds exist. We love hearing from current employees, and encourage you to bring your comments in a more specific way to an internal resource, such as your manager, Human Resources, or our CEO who has an open-door policy.

Pros

Great benefit package for employees and their families. Fantastic workplace close to all of the freeways. I have nothing but positive words to say regarding the agency. I like what WestEd stands for, the work that we do as a whole. I love that we are in compliance year after year with great leaders running the agency. I like that we make a difference.

Cons

Not enough hours in the day!

Thank you for your hard work with us, we are always happy to hear feedback from current employees! Thank you also for being a loyal employee for more than 10 years – you join the more than one-third of our current regular staff who are considered long-term staff members, all with an impressive 10+ years of service. Thank you for taking the time to write about us, and please feel free to bring up any concerns or compliments to your supervisor or the Human Resources Department. Our mission of supporting educators at all levels (local, city, county, state, district, and national) is rewarding and at times difficult, so thank you for your dedication to the work and to WestEd. I encourage you to make sure that you are taking time for yourself, away from work as well. Work-life balance is important!

Pros

WestEd is a very solid organization and for the most part a good place to work. They offer good benefits and decent work-life balance

Cons

The organization is funded on a soft money basis, so you have to constantly bring in new business in order to keep your job.

Thanks for your feedback. Our high agency standards combined with many of our employees’ high individual standards makes work-life balance critical. We certainly appreciate the importance of a clear and stated work-life balance as one of the cornerstones of a productive workforce. It is certainly true that as a non-profit the majority of our funding comes from grants and projects, which WestEd seeks out and applies for. There is a trade-off in the areas in which we work between having a large variety of work options and projects available, and having a steady stream of one kind of work only. By choosing to diversify, we create a need for ongoing funding. This is the nature of non-profits, research agencies and education providers in many organizations across the United States, and WestEd is no different in that respect. Where we do set ourselves apart is our determination to be a “best in class” agency that serves a vast and diverse client base in nearly every state. Thank you for your work while with WestEd.
