Pros

The health benefits are amazing, the faculty union is strong, and faculty salaries are competitive in light of the cheap cost of living in Kalamazoo (they are less competitive without adjusting for cost of living and non-faculty salaries are poor under any circumstance)

Cons

Despite claiming it values diversity and claiming to be a national-level university, it is actually hostile towards difference, especially towards those from other parts of the country and non-Christians. Faculty are bullied by their superiors and their colleagues for not fitting in. The majority of the students are poor in ability and motivation and would rather not be there, and the students are also hostile to outsiders. Tenure and promotion is judged based on likability and conformity and not on merit (if people don't like you, they can find ways to interpret a good record in the worst possible light, and if people do like you, they can find ways to interpret a bad record in the best possible light). If you're not from the Midwest and/or not Christian, avoid this university at all costs (and even if you are both, you might want to avoid the university since declines in student enrollment makes this a sinking ship).

Pros

Kalamazoo is a wonderful city in which to live. Western has a great deal of potential. There are many bright, creative faculty and staff. The current administration has done a great deal to build our physical infrastructure and the campus looks better and better. We have reasonable pay and excellent benefits.

Cons

Many programs, academic and student services, are understaffed. It is a very top down organization with the present administration. Our enrollment has dropped and the administration seems focused on numbers rather than building quality programs. There are few graduate assistantships available for graduate students.
