Pros

Solid, growing company. Good benefits for single individuals, a bonus program available to everyone, 401K match (4.5 on 6% contribution), paid holidays and vacation. Offers a great opportunity to get a foot in the door and gain experience in warehousing and distribution. Stable, steady job. The work will always be there.

Cons

High turnover at the ground level. Pays below market for entry level. Many employees stay to gain some experience and move on to similar, better paying jobs. Experiencing some growing pains which requires reshuffling of organization and management structure, as well as implementation of new operational methods. Some trial and error involved.

Great feedback - Thank you! You are absolutely right that high turnover makes it difficult to take care of our team members and our customers. It is something we think and talk about constantly. As you mentioned, the company continues to grow, and with that comes opportunities as we figure out how to do more things with more people. I would like to think we continue to get better at that every day.

Pros

The leaders really do want the best for the people and the company. Sometimes personal opinion and business opinion don't see eye to eye. Regardless the people are friendly and caring.

Cons

You'll never feel like you have done enough or are responsible for enough not to be let go. Although the bonus program pays out to nearly every employee the bonus' are low and the method to be granted a bonus is inconsistent and or ambiguous.

It sounds like you’re one of our newer managers, so I’m encouraged to hear you’ve developed a high opinion of our leadership and the rest of the team. As a more recent hire, I’m guessing you’re still recovering from our extensive training program. I’ve heard it’s much like standing in front of a fire hose of data, so I’m sure it can be very challenging at times. You should know, however, that we won’t let someone go unless they are clearly disinterested in learning and growing. Employees develop at different rates, but we have always worked with everyone to identify realistic performance targets. We might need to do a better job of communicating this, but I assure you we won’t let good employees go. Also, I know the goal program hasn’t been administered consistently across all departments. Due to our rapid growth, many of our newer managers haven’t been fully trained on the program, so one of our focuses for next period will be evaluating the goal program and retooling it as needed. I appreciate your feedback and I’m glad you’ve stuck it out with us so far. Don’t give up! It gets better.

They'll screw you on your pay

Pros

Most of the people there are okay

Cons

Western Paper likes to bill itself as a small business writ large, but they're actually just another skeezy corp just like most corps their size. This company used weasel-y legalese language to squirm out of paying me a bonus I had earned 6 weeks prior to the deadline for earning it. I tried to work with them in order to get my bonus when I accepted another position, but they lied to me, and then after the fact pointed out that the company handbook supported their claim, which I guess is why they use the word "incentive" in the handbook, and "bonus" whenever it is discussed out loud. A decent small business wouldn't screw over someone who went above and beyond their job duties to earn a bonus just because they were offered a higher salary somewhere else, but Western Paper is the kind of corp that will screw an employee who busted butt for them over a 3 figure sum, even though it is a 9 figure company. If you're foolish enough to accept a job with this company, make sure you don't listen to all of their BS about the "bonus" program, and skip it like most of the senior people do(should have realized there was a reason that people who would get a significant bonus still skip participating in the program. If you're a potential customer reading this, consider that if this is how they treat their employees, how do they treat their customers? There are better options for jan-san in Denver.

It’s clear your biggest issue with Western is the fact you didn’t get your bonus because you resigned before we paid it out. It should have been communicated to you both during your initial hire and during your exit interview, but we don’t pay bonuses to people who aren’t employed with us. That’s not a policy I think needs to be changed. I am concerned you felt our managers don’t participate in the goal program, however. During our most recent payout (we pay bonuses three times per year) over 60% of our managers received a bonus, so I’m not sure where you got that impression. We’ve grown a great deal in the last few years, and we have some new managers, and new departments (!), so we’re going to be focusing on making sure the goal program is consistently experienced throughout all the new departments. I wish we had been able to work with you on your departure date to make sure you got your bonus, particularly if you truly worked hard to get it. Sometimes waiting even a week is enough to make sure you get your bonus. We’ll make sure to emphasize this point during training and exit interviews.
