Pros

Somewhat good health insurance for new employee

Cons

After 8 weeks of salary you go to straight commission. But commission is spread out over long time. Even when on 100% commission they "dictate" that you are in the office about 16 hours a week doing busy work creating a mountain of paperwork that nobody ever looks at. Management fools themselves into believing that doing what worked 40 years ago will work today if we just try harder and harder and harder. Bullying is the sales management idea of being helpful. Turnover is very high. There goal is to show the agents how to earn thirty thousand a year so that they will stay. But they have no idea how to do show them how to do that. When being recruited they say fifty thousand first year. Micromanagement to the extreme. Got a great job early this year and left them behind. Save yourself the agony.

Pros

very limited with exceptions including a small percentage of knowledgeable and considerate administrative staff members and middle managers.

Cons

company is currently in total disarray with the recent inclusion of "quantum leap" program. this is an ineffective micromanagement tactic that will result in voluminous agent resignation and termination, lackluster sales results at best and deepen the already existing poor morale in agencies. ceo john barrett who was never a "field guy" is totally out of tune on this one. other major negative factors include very poor and expensive fringe benefit package including major med and hospitalization, 100% commissionable income after 1 year, non competitive term and universal life products especially at 100K and above, deceptive hiring promises surrounding compensation and entreprenaural freedom, lack of name recognition and industry advertising (none outside of tennis anyone?) unrealistic annual production quota, poor presentation software packages for complicated or well to do prospects, etc....

Extreme micro management/misguided leadership

Pros

Western Southern Life is a Fortune 500 Company with a good benifits package and the potential to become great.

Cons

Our misguided leaders (upper management) use extreme micro management in an attempt to justify their positions and maintain all power. These esteemed leaders are more interested in your daily activity rather than actual results. As long as you waste your valuable sales time providing them with numbers and other activities their happy. It's a constant struggle as an agent between satisfying our leaderships need for information and actual income producing work. Currently it is not a Happy place to work! We do have an extremely high turnover in agents and middle managers. The reason for this is due to inexperienced people being promoted to fill a open managers spot. In our leaderships effort to maintain total and complete control they promote these people and treat them like puppets until they cannot take it anymore, usally about a year to a year and a half. This is the reality of working here in 2011. On a positive note, I believe that some person in our leadership (elusive as they may be) will step up and take action very soon to improve this situation and it will once again be a great place to work.
