Pros

Some good people left that grew up in Westinghouse and understood the unique and special quality of the industry and the people. Unfortunately these folks are leaving at an increasing rate due to the ineffective leadership of the new executives brought in by Toshiba.

Cons

No upward mobility unless you are brought in by new senior leadership. Those who dedicated their careers at Westinghouse thought of by new leadership as worthless. Losing knowledge of nuclear industry by the minute. Firing people at a whim.

Pros

There are a lot of intelligent people working at Westinghouse that care to do the right thing. The job is meaningful and at the end of the day you go home feeling like you're working on something that will leave a positive impact on the world. The facilities are great, on-site cafeteria, on-site gym, new building, high-walled cubes, and lots of windows. Alternate work schedules and flexible time are great to have, and the continuing education is completely paid for.

Cons

The management has changed things so quickly and cut funding to nearly everything that isn't part of the main project goals. The joke around the company is that they cut funding to order tissues and other office supplies, but they have no problem funding ridiculous "training" programs, the latest of which is the "Slip Simulator" where you strap into a harness and learn how to walk on slippery surfaces...really? They can fund that nonsense, but not conferences where we talk to our customers face-to-face? The company is being led by a bunch of metric-watchers and middle-managers who are completely useless and have no idea what goes on at a technical level underneath of them. As an engineer at this company, my business unit has 7 layers of management before something gets to the CEO. Granted, this is a global company, but when the CEO specifically mentions that he sees great things ahead for the company coming out of your group, you can expect that he only sees $$ signs and has never once talked to that group individually. Salaries are also extremely noncompetitive and HR refuses to do any sort of salary compensation. Since people are leaving, it's also very easy to become pigeonholed and stuck in your job without gaining experience.

Ignorant and Arrogant Management

Pros

Solid, tight-knit group of co-workers that were almost like family. Immediate supervisors were great and very supportive. Benefits and pay were decent.

Cons

Too many to list all of them. Here's a few: - Workers consistently offered suggestions and solutions for issues, but advice was never taken. - Grossly overspent money in so many areas (a result of poor mgmt, IMO). Often overpaid for equipment. Procured the same components over and over. Essentially forced engineers to relocate to sites and handed out per-diem like candy when the relocation was completely unnecessary. And so much more...but we couldn't afford napkins in the break room, that would break the bank. - Slowly and consistently removed any perks to working for the company, be it through benefits changes, holiday changes, withholding raises/promotions, etc. - Too much mgmt. Consistently had to answer to 3-5 different managers. They never agreed on priorities, never agreed on who I should listen to, often threw up roadblocks which slowed me down (for the sake of justifying their existence) even if they had no technical reasoning. - Senior execs and mgmt were so arrogant and kept trying to get everyone to drink the Kool-Aid and discuss how great Westinghouse (was), despite spending ridiculous sums on money on bonuses and consultants which only helped lay more people off.
