Enjoyed My Time at Westinghouse except for the sudden layoff

Pros

Very intelligent, dedicated engineers. I have worked in various industries (software, hardware, biotech, and nuclear) and I found the nuclear engineers to be the easiest to work with. Personally, I was paid well and given some freedom to do my job. I had two excellent managers. I found communicating with engineers and first level managers to be easy. This was not always the case in other industries. The work fascinated me. Most employees also had a solid relationship with the NRC, and I was often surprised as to how easily they navigated the NRC submittal and review processes.

Cons

The nuclear business is suffering. So many factors working against a nuclear engineering firm, particularly in the United States. Strange disconnect between middle management and first line management/engineering. We had no idea this latest layoff was coming.

You're Always Expendable

Pros

Salary (large reason I didn't quit) A lot of good people and engineers (main reason I didn't quit) Benefits are standard for large companies.

Cons

Upper management cannot make smart decisions to save their lives or the company. The work-life balance is poor. You can't expect a raise from a bankrupt company; you can expect people getting laid off and frozen salaries while certain people receive absurd bonuses. Director-level and up are paid far to much for what they bring to the table. The engineers who actually do the work and are constantly trying to fix others' mistakes are not valued. I tried to choose the career path I wanted at all of my performance reviews, and my manager (no matter who it was, and they rotated a lot) would always want me to stay where I was because there was never enough people do the work. Could never advance. No one really cared about me or my career.

Pros

Pioneer and global OEM of light water reactors specialty services for the commercial industry - still some brand recognition. Global presence, still have some excellent Technicians and engineers, project managers and middle management. Industry still has limited qualified service and fuel vendors - limited competition ensures some level of sales even with hardships.

Cons

Deceit. Heavy handed upper management - ego do as I say not as I do. Global market changes, not changing with it. Senior management reorganizations still use the same senior management (no new ideas or leadership). Same leaders and same ideas. Just different formats. Huge salary and bonuses for directors and above - came clear with bankruptcy. Yet the majority of company stuck with poor future prospects, no raises, no bonuses. Just lectures of being focused and in his together. Many managers and senior engineers and project managers have just as much commitment. Plugged in 24 - 7 and have given as much for much less. Current restructuring indicate no new leadership or meaningful organization changes forthcoming - while a major course correction is needed as well as a heathy understanding of the changing market conditions and increasing competitive nature of all our businesses. Cannot expect our typically good product lines to still deliver as always - it's a false assumption or worse, a near term lie to make your numbers before you jump ship.
