Dead end job with nowhere to advance. Dull and tired work environment.
Pros
Decent benefits. Good work/life balance. Great employee discounts. You will learn a lot about the distribution industry and gain a general knowledge of how construction products work.
Cons
Poor atmosphere with nowhere to advance. You may be expected to perform Inside Sales tasks, ( a more prestigious job title that averaged $3 more per hour ), for NO extra pay. My location specifically did not have air conditioning so I was sadly forced to work in the heat, ( 90-100 degrees in the summer ) while performing office based tasks such as sales orders, purchase orders, etc. There was no way for me to move inside although I desperately wanted it considering the extra tasks I was already completing on a daily basis. When I mentioned wanting a pay raise to management to more accurately reflect my daily workload, I was basically laughed out of the room. Please note the *may perform other tasks where necessary* in the Counter Sales job description. Pay close attention to your job description and stand your ground if asked to go beyond your duties. Management is unmotivated acting on a daily basis. This contributes to the very dry and tired atmosphere I experienced during my time with White Cap. The human resources department is a complete joke and won't take any complaints you have seriously. I've written a couple and I usually never hear back from them. Customers get rude with you at the counter over issues that aren't your fault (pricing, shipping delays, etc.) , and you are just expected to deal with their anger, and lately since COVID, construction workers have been even more on edge, ready to snap at you the moment you make a simple mistake.
