Bad culture and low morale - need leadership change!

Pros

Good company for those looking for entry/low level positions as a means to grow your career. There are lots of positions available across brands and they are generally open to people moving around. Good employee discount and sample sales.

Cons

I honestly believe Williams Sonoma could be a great company to work for if there was a complete overhaul of the executives. Laura Alber and Sandra Stangl are simply not executives that inspire people to do their best. Laura, as well as the other brand VPs, have instituted a culture of fear. Everyone is scared to speak up or give a real opinion to them. Middle and upper management will say yes to anything they ask for, never challenging or offering up alternative ideas. Business is stagnant because we do the same things over and over and over. Business decisions are made completely reactionary to hourly sales reads. No one has time to put quality thought and effort into projects because we're always playing catch up. I have seen countless people passed up for promotions because they aren't in the "in crowd". Most people are not promoted based on the quality of your work, but whether you go to happy hour with your boss and play the politic game. Compensation is below all of the other major retailers in SF/Bay Area. The company is so cheap THERE ARE NO OFFICE SUPPLIES. People seriously bring their own paper and pens. It is pathetic. Laura and Sandra are given multi-million dollar bonuses at the same time HR tells us there is no budget to backfill open positions. In summary: you will be overworked, under-compensated and experience extremely low morale working here. If anyone from the board is reading this, change is needed -- please!

WORST COMPANY EVER

Pros

None. Nothing. Nada. None. Nothing. Nada. None. Nothing. Nada. None. Nothing. Nada. None. Nothing. Nada. None. Nothing. Nada. None. Nothing. Nada.

Cons

Pretty much everything about this company is terrible. It all starts at the top with the President (Janet Hayes). Monday starts off super early rushing and getting ready for a series of business reviews, including a 4-hour business review led by Janet, where she and the other executives are served meals because the meeting is so long. This sets the tone for the work week. Janet micro-manages every aspect of this company, and therefore nobody has any empowerment. Everyone drags their feet on making any decision, out of fear, or waiting weeks to get some face-time with Janet to get a simple word changed on a box. There is no respect for anyones time at this company; expect lots of worthless meetings, where everyone is required to attend, many 4-6 hour meetings standing (not sitting), and many meetings run HOURS longer than scheduled. The worst part of this entire company is the culture. Mean people are everywhere. There is absolutely no reason for the way people treat each other, but it is terrible. Management lacks integrity. Personal/professional development: There is none Business Travel: You will be required to pay for this on your own, and be reimbursed. But expect to wait AT LEAST 3-4 months. I was appalled at how long this took, and after inquiring, I was told "You will get your money, so be patient". Salary - they pay about 30% less than competitors, touting their "employee discount" and other perks as something competitors do not offer. The employee discount is 40% on most items, but you will also find that the mark-up on most items is 60-70%, so you are really not getting any sort of deal; instead you realize how much they over-charge customers. Really, overall this was the worst career decision I have ever made.

Pros

The brand is excellent and the company's performance has been superb over the last 15 years. It has a wonderful heritage and they make efforts to preserve it. There are some very talented people working at Williams-Sonoma, as well that are experts at what they do. The location in the city is wonderful and there are some above average perks with working in the corporate office.

Cons

Leadership is extremely short sighted, so you need to have outrageously huge patience and flexibility. The top down mentality permeates every brand and provides all of the corporate pain you can take. Most of the best talent burns out or realizes it is time to go, before ever really making a difference. Pay definitely does not match the workload.
