Pros

* Everyone I work with is supportive, positive, funny, and easy to get along with. Management listens to their employees, and actually changes their decisions based on feedback. * Upper management is the most honest and transparent upper management I've ever seen. As an individual contributor, you have a good idea of how the company is doing, even the parts where it struggles. They don't share everything, of course (I don't see how you could effectively run a company while sharing absolutely everything), but all essential information is there. * Pay is very competitive. * Management cares very much about work/life balance. Working overtime does happen occasionally, but it is considered a last resort, and is quite rare (maybe once or twice a year).

Cons

Your experience as an employee is a substantially shaped by the clients you work with. If you are assigned a good client, it will be great. If your client is a hot mess, well, it can be a struggle. It is part of WT's shtick to improve the processes of its clients, so it almost always gets better. But when you're in the part where it hasn't gotten better yet, it's sometimes not much fun.

Thank you for the thoughtful review! And yes sometimes client engagement in particular start a bit complicated as we learn to work with each other -- the key is we are continuously making progress to improve. If you are not seeing that in certain cases please ping your managers, or feel free to let me know directly... Thx! - Tobias

Pros

If you're a new college grad or a junior engineer then WillowTree is an amazing place to start your career. You'll work with some very smart and talented people on projects that can reach millions of users. WillowTree has some of the kindest and most helpful people working at it and that's its true strength.

Cons

Once you hit mid-level you have to seriously consider if it's worth staying long term. This is mainly because the grind to senior level is slow and pay is pretty mediocre for anyone between junior and senior level. By the time you've spent a year or two as a mid-level engineer at WillowTree you're capable of getting a senior position at another company that pays significantly more. The promotion process lacks a lot of transparency and is infrequent. Basically if a group of engineering directors don't think you're ready for promotion then it's a minimum of 6 months and up to a year until you have another chance at a promotion or pay increase.

Thanks for your review and kind comments. One of our core goals is to be a great place to land out of college/grad school and really grow your skills working on global applications for brand name clients. Sorry to hear you feel our promotion process isn't transparent or clear. We do promotions twice a year (large group at end of year and smaller group of mid-year), and we have rolled out very detailed rubrics for each position. In the Dec 2020 promotions cycle we made 105 promotions, recognizing many of our incredible team members. I would highly encourage you to swing by my weekly office hours to take me through how you think that process is falling short. It's absolutely vital that we have a long-career path for our team, and would like to work with you to figure out how to make that better and clearer. - Tobias

Pros

1. WT is a GREAT place to learn and grow your craft. You will be constantly surrounded by people smarter than you and more experienced than you who are all enthusiastic to teach and help you grow. 2. Management has really done a great job throughout COVID of being super transparent with all staff. Regular updates on how the business is doing - losses, wins, decisions and future outlook are all right out in the open for every single employee. 3. The culture at WT is super welcoming - tons of friendly people working here at every single level in the business. All said, I have really enjoyed my time working at WT.

Cons

1. Work life balance can sometimes be less than optimal. For the most part you're going to be working around 40-50 hours a week, but there are definitely times where I've had month-long stretches of 12 hour days. 2. Allocation can sometimes be murky. There have been several times that I have spent a week ramping up on a project just to find out that I'm getting assigned to another project. There are also weeks where I have touched 6 different client projects where it seems like a majority of the company is assigned to 1 client at a time. Being spread so thin along with the uncertainty of next projects can become pretty taxing after awhile.
