There is way better out there

Pros

Ability to move around and explore new roles to increase your marketability If you can find a good group within the company, it is an okay place to work while that leadership is in place.

Cons

Xcel is not focused nor concerned about retaining people. Xcel has policies about safety and work-life balance and they follow it only if it's convenient for them. Xcel skews definitions by calling a hiring freeze a pause while majority of the departments are under staffed Most changes are lateral moves with no pay increase despite an increase in job responsibilities. Company imposes major budget cuts despite making huge profits Horrible leadership that makes poor decisions and expect employees to work overtime to correct their errors without admitting any wrong-doing Xcel states that their pay is competitive but they only compares job titles and not roles and responsibilities. When an employee leaves, you are expected to cover their work with no compensation and often times the company decides not to backfill the role. Work environment is toxic and it appears that the leadership looks for benefits that employees enjoy just to take it away when they do not get their rate hike. Xcel implemented a hybrid policy and hired people based on that policy just to reverse it and make everyone return to the office. Leadership has very selective hearing and retention, often times making up stories to justify a policy. The company struggle to retain and promote their black employees, but are quick to boast about the ones they have before they leave the company. Following an 8.3 billion dollar profit in 2022, Xcel is talking about removing benefits, eliminating employee bonuses, increase scrutiny on backfilling vacant positions. Leadership has a very limited knowledge of the groups they lead and somehow make it the employee's fault for not educating them. Leadership will give a presentation on the importance of work-life balance, then right after ask you to work extra time. The written policies are only applicable when the company wants to punish an employee for not volunteering time to do extra work, but the company leadership does not follow their own policies. Company leadership unplugs during their time off from work, but expects their employees to be reachable during their time off from work. You can expect an 1%-2% raise each year unless the company does not get an rate hike, then you can expect no raise. Either way, your pay is below market and your raises are below inflation. The longer you stay with the company, the less money you make. The company feels that wages should not matter to employees and they should love the work they do and what they can accomplish. This is said by leaders making $200k+ a year.

Upper Management vs Employees

Pros

My immediate coworkers are smart, dedicated, and I enjoy working with them.

Cons

Somehow Upper Management has made this company a miserable place to work in a short time. Hiring freezes, not allowed to backfill positions when already short staffed. Compensation is (and has been) below market and upper management will cut bonuses to make earnings. Which seems reasonable, until you realize that without bonuses, salaries are 15% under peers, according to Xcel’s own numbers. Hypocrisy in upper management - “cost pressures” and leading the “green energy transition” but still flying corporate jets (plural). Last straw is new return to office mandate - suspect it’s to increase attrition for cost reasons but will have biggest impact on DEI. No reason to stay any more.

Pros

Peers are smart but becoming burnt out and depressed.

Cons

The C-Suite leadership has made this company a place of dread and depression. The have hired an ineffective “lean management” firm which is not practicing lean and has created organizational decay and morale to fall to an all time low - they are toxic, nobody likes them, yet they have license to continue creating problems within the company. The CEO is now referring to shareholders as “our owners” and asking employees to use the same term - this is demeaning and gross. The CEO and his leadership don’t care about employees, or the public we serve, but rather have an obsession to bring “relentless value to our owners”. Think about that every time you pay your high Xcel Energy bill. There is a core of sycophants in the leadership that are afraid to speakup, and rather collect a paycheck, the board of directors also seem aloof to the problems the CEO and the COO have caused in the company.
