Growing pains

Pros

+ plenty of interesting technical challenges to solve + good benefits + good workspace + flexible working + lots of great people + Rod Drury was a great CEO

Cons

- a lot (arguably too much) depends on the team you're in and on your manager. Some teams have it better than others, so there are lots of silos with people not even talking to each other and having completely different experiences - salary below market rate - no clear career progression - too much focus on breaking even at the expense of long term prospects of the business - too many restructures with no good outcomes - no focus on establishing and promoting good practices - lack of vision for the future - lack of clear direction - mid-level management not always up to the task, it looks like Xero is having problems with selecting and growing its leaders - great values declared, but not lived by - poor hiring practices - great startup culture is being replaced by boilerplate corporate bureaucracy and petty office politics

Pros

A strong rank and file talent pool for the most part making sound decisions given the context and reality of building product at Xero. Great creative talent in other areas of the company. Great offices in amazing cities around the world. For the most part, the culture and structure enables teams to build good software without undue process or stifling rigidity that hold back many other similar companies. This is a real asset to Xero and its value shouldn't be underestimated

Cons

A lot of the real brains of the operation have walked out the door in the last few months, and the remaining people who are valiantly holding it together are teetering on the edge. As another review mentioned, when the CEO doesn't get his way he will draw a conclusion in his own head that the people standing in his way, or who disagree, are slow or not performing, despite any evidence to the contrary. This on many recent occasions has led to resignations. What now remains is upper management with no real courage. This works for the CEO because he gets what he wants with most people acting on his ideas without critique. The C level is misaligned and don't seem to be all that capable as a group which leaves others to pick up the slack and show the real leadership. It is not clear if people are placed around the exec table based on merit or just for show.

We appreciate you taking the time to provide feedback. However, we are very sorry to read some of your comments as they suggest attitudes or behaviour at Xero that is counter to our values. We take our values very seriously as they are the core of our culture and shape everything we do. Our CEO and leadership team work hard to reflect and entrench them both internally and externally. In particular the importance of being open, transparent, listening, treating people equally, and working collaboratively. I encourage you to reach out to the PX team if you’re keen to chat about this any further. Or if you would prefer to provide additional details anonymously please do so via our internal tool, Officevibe, as this will give us the information we need to directly address your concerns.

Great company

Pros

Incredible benefits and rewards to the sales team. No hierarchy of management. Immediate manager offers full support and training when needed. Xero is a company that cares for their customers and their staff, and this really shows. It's a company you can be proud to say you work at as everyone loves Xero. I'm lucky to be in a relatively new team so I get to take ownership and really make a difference. The offices are modern and have arcade games, ping pong and snooker tables, coffee machine & fizzy drink fridge, stand to sit desks and working with macs. No uniform- casual attire. Free food before team meetings (bacon butties in the morning), fish n chips and prosecco have also been provided in the afternoons. Internal social networking platform is really good for showing staff appreciation in an ever-growing company. Really exciting company to work for, partnered with microsoft and apple, to name a few. Xero shows no sign of lacking and that makes the journey very exciting.

Cons

Salaries could be better, although they are not extremely low. Xero is a company i'd like to work for , for a long time but cannot see this being feasible on my standard salary. Sales targets are unrealistic (not many, if any, people hit them) so can be demotivating, and sometimes makes you fear for your job (if you're in sales). There are a couple bad eggs in the office.

Thanks for taking the time to write this review. We've been working hard on developing our employee benefits in the UK and so it's good to know you appreciate what's now in place. We were delighted to get a 'very good' rating from our participation in the Best Companies survey recently. We know our sales targets are stretching but we're a growing company who are establishing a huge market presence and large customer base. So, the emphasis on great sales, great process and fast pace is definitely part of life at Xero for us all, including our sales teams. We have a fantastic product though and a world class team of sales specialists and account managers so please pull in support from your manager and colleagues who are here to help you succeed and hit those sales targets.
