Pros

- Tons of opportunity if you take initiative and work hard. Company is expanding fast so always job to move up to. - Free company shares, vesting over 3 years. Share price has quadrupled in the time I've been there (over 5 years). - Very family friendly. - Good support for flexible working, working from home. - Casual dress - you can rock your blue hair, cross-dressing, goth outfits, whatever ... - Lots of training available. - Some opportunity for international travel, depending on role. - If you're on the Product side (developer, QA, product manager/owner) you are very well looked after. - Free espresso coffee, free company drinks every Friday night, regular ice cream, pizza, cup cakes and other treats. - Free t-shirt every year. - Company is dominating in the markets it plays in. Very, very bright future.

Cons

- Some terrible managers who stay and do damage for far too long. - Company hasn't handled people complaining about terrible managers very well. Some good people have left because they weren't heard. - Pace of work is FAST! Rapid expansion and adoption of agile methodology means there's no mucking around.

Pros

I worked in the Wellington office. Definitely recommend Xero to others as it's a very healthy company with an excellent working environment for engineers in NZ. Xero operates at scale and has a bunch of interesting engineering problems as a result, and while it depends on the pod you're being hired in to (sometimes you may have an option of more than one team if your PX rep/hiring manager thinks you may be a better fit elsewhere), you'll never be bored and will have a chance to work with some smart cookies using cutting-edge tech. I can vouch that at least on one pod you will be given the time to engineer solutions correctly without rushing them out the door. Excellent opportunities for career growth and promotion, if you are hungry for success this is the place to be. Xero culture is great, most folks are friendly and approachable and opportunities to have flexible working arrangements (remote working, later starts depending on your pod) add to the quality of life. Misc perks are beyond what most NZ firms will offer including unlimited barista coffee & fizz, free fruit, pinball/games machines, things like paddle boards & bikes to use at lunch, and frequent discounts from other NZ companies like gym memberships, insurance etc. The new Wellington office is on balance a great environment to work in.

Cons

Xero currently retains its startup hunger & speed due to its roots, but this will have to be maintained and as the company continues to grow it is taking on more of an enterprise nature as is expected. As it has grown so fast there are spots of tech debt that are proving tricky to revise, and some projects are hurried to meet deadlines that may impact you, as well as resulting in classic large company comms issues. This varies by pod and TL though and my experience had few issues with regards to this.

Pros

Great culture and nice office environment.. Fellow developers are fantastic people and super-talented too.. Over here, they just want Xero to be the last place you work in.. period.

Cons

On the technical end, Xero seems to be accumulating fair bit of legacy code and tech debt as we continue to grow larger and with an expansion of product offerings. We do not seem to be adopting or evaluating the latest tech stack fast enough and quite concerning is that we might not have a concrete plan of action on a company-wide tech stack adoption and migration plan. Why is this important? ultimately we are a beautiful business software company, we should have full #ownership of the software we use. Sometimes management seems to be little bit lost in direction which is understandable considering the pace of our growth (in all areas such as new countries, new customers and new hiring).. I guess we have to keep on putting our focus and attention on our customers and delivering value to them. It's not easy and it can be a learning cycle but our managers are definitely trying their best.
