Great mission with horrible leadership

Pros

The mission of the CEO is admirable. His desire to help those who may not have an opportunity to step foot into the corporate world due to the color of their skin or the neighborhood in which they live is quite honorable. The participants prove to be quite a pleasure, they are smart and they embody excellent potential which would provide many benefits to the corporations in which they intern, including owning their own businesses.

Cons

Although the mission of the CEO, Gerald Chertavian is admirable, he does nothing to hold his executives and leadership accountable. He allows them to take advantage of the employees, staff members and interns who dedicate their time to giving 100% for this organization. The employee turnover rate is horrendous. This company lacks proper leadership and the atmosphere and practices of it's leadership has proven to be quite discriminatory, hypocritical and sabotaging in the face of its mission. The executives that are in place do not model the mission of this non-profit organization. After working here for quite some time it has become obvious that most of the leadership lack the proper experience to lead a team and is only there for a title. They lack loyalty, they never take responsibility and accountability for their actions, thus their team members usually suffers the consequences of their lack of knowledge, unprofessional behavior and ignorance. There is no room for growth here, any conversations pertaining to promotion and or raises go ignored and unanswered and if by some chance one does receive an answer, it never ends up in favor of the employee who dedicates their time to upholding the mission of closing the opportunity divide. Unfortunately for the participants, they are being led by a group of people who lack common decency, professionalism and proper work place decorum. The rules, guidelines and core values they set for the participants, while honorable, are not modeled by the staff members and leadership. I use to promote this program by telling everyone I came across about the benefits of such a program, (for potential employees as well as participants) unfortunately this program has been an utter disappointment and now I refuse to send anyone into such a organization which wholeheartedly embodies disorganization and un-professionalism. Year Up New York (as well as many of their other sites) is a sinking ship.

Great Mission, Tough Transition

Pros

In the universe of nonprofits this is a fantastic mission with a relatively business-oriented culture, both of which I appreciated.

Cons

The organization began to struggle with moving from small (200 employees) to mid-sized (500) over the course of my nearly 5 years there. Issues of equitable promotion & compensation, centralization of management and strategic functions, and local market relevance posed significant challenges, which weren't often thoughtfully managed.

Pros

I really do enjoy working here at Year Up. The students make the hard work worth while, but also allows you to grow as a professional. This is also a great space to learn to navigate political spaces. Working here has allowed me to really grow professionally and, learn to manage up.

Cons

I also recognize the pitfalls of the organization. 1 is that at times we don't practice what we preach. As an org we invest millions of dollars into social campaigns encouraging other employers to hire opportunity youth however we do not hire full time employees that fall within that spectrum. If we do make the hires it is extremely hard for them to grow.
