Approach with Caution - Inside Sales

Pros

The product is fantastic. Web Proxy (SSL,DLP,ABA,NGFW) all in the cloud. The product when positioned right will simply take over the market. It was very easy to sell against competitors in the space as so many organizations are leaning towards SaaS solutions. The people they hire are top notch professionals with great experience.

Cons

This organization lacks real sales leadership. It starts with the top rolls down the hills to all the sales reps. We all realize that no sales organization is perfect, but this was probably the worst environments. We were treated as step-children, never fully be adopted as a long-term strategy of the company. Zscaler will say all the right things, but their actions never aligned with their words.

Pros

Good products, good people, solid training

Cons

If a company has Palo Alto it's very hard to move them off. Netskope seems to be comparable in a lot of ways. Everything is measured - how many calls you take, how many emails, how long you're on the computer. I was working nights and weekends often. They're operating like a start up but they're already public - very intense. Sales cycle can be very long (over a year) if you're not jumping into an active cycle started by someone else who left. It was a lot of work with little reward. Too many sales reps in territory with not enough accounts. Seasoned sales reps making a ton of PG calls. Internal calls weekly to see who you sent outreach to and who got back to you. Marketing and events budget was weak. Very male dominated - every call was "bro talk" but they were very respectful overall. Stock went down dramatically from when I joined so my options were cut in half and the way they addressed it was to add stock if you stayed another year. They said they were "in the boat" with you but my manager was barely available because he was focused on hiring and dealing with reorgs and changes.

Pros

The core tech is fantastic.

Cons

I’ve never worked for an organization with so many people, regardless of geography or function, openly talk about how much they want to leave. If you’re looking here - you may be checking out a role because of what seems to be the upcoming waterfall of people who are trying to leave the sales org. People (sales, engineering, channel…) are making much less money this year and, because the culture ranges from non-existent to combative, they have no tolerance to stay. For context on the culture - you need a leader who advocates for you who is in the AppD inner circle or you are SOL. There is combative management styles and manipulating territories based on aforementioned AppD inner circle. It’s pervasive so my impression is it comes from the top. The inner circle is very loyal to eachother because they all plan to follow each other to the next gig. Therefore, if you are not part of that, you are at a disadvantage. There have been situations where territories have moved when a deal is in flight. The house (AppD inner circle) always wins. But, good news, if you’re doing a split and your leader is AppD and the other is not, you have an advantage.
