Cons
If you have prior industry experience, do yourself a favor and apply somewhere else like San Diego or San Francisco. For starters, HR will refuse to give you a raise if they do not like you. They will happily pay someone more to replace you. Even if the person has less training and experience than you do and expect you to train them. The promotions and title announced by the company are an illusion. You will have an increased workload and stress with marginal pay increase.The pay salaries are also not very transparent. They will pay a regular RA more than a senior RA who has more experience and has been with the company for a longer period of time. HR plays favorites and decides your fate in the company. If HR does not like you they will utilize every resource possible to get you fired. If your manager is nice they will protect you if not 😬. They will ask misleading questions and tailor the evidence to their narrative to accuse you of wrongdoing. HR becomes very defensive if you call out on their BS and will try to fire you. This is not just another salty employee’s words. If you go around and ask the people who are working there most of the time you will hear the same answer: coworkers are nice but the company sucks. Everyone is afraid of HR because they have too much authority and goes on frequent power trips. If you email HR a simple question, you will receive a rude and unprofessional response (if they don’t like you or the head of hr is having a bad day). The scientists are afraid to stand up to HR because 1) they’re buddies 2) offending HR will likely result in them not hiring for your team. They have limited parking at their main office so if you come late you will need to park further and walk an extra 10 minutes to work. They will send mass emails to employees who don’t park in the stalls but ignore it when upper management parks right in front of the warehouse. There are many people that are terrible to work with at Zymo esp upper management but the complaints have simply been ignored thanks to the graces of Dr. Jia. The attrition rate and work morale at Zymo is allow for a reason.
