Pros

- if your team is friendly and open, you'll have a great time working with other members of your team - free lunches on Thursdays to make up for the litany of issues they have elsewhere - free fruit, because I was trying to make this list three items long

Cons

- complete breakdown of communication in between teams, especially between buildings and divisions - HR doesn't actually care, and instead are focusing their time on trying to salvage the company's reputation (just look at the previous reviews) - upper management doesn't have a sense of direction for the company as a whole - incredibly toxic politics between teams when it comes time to assign blame - even if you're stretched thin with your R&D projects, they'll still make you do tech support because they're not willing to hire a whole tech support team - have to fight for work life balance - they don't provide fair compensation, despite increasing your job duties - blatant sexist comments

Pros

Thursday lunches, some flexibility in schedule, some good coworkers

Cons

The recent trend of negative reviews really have said it all. I worked at Zymo for over five years and the company culture (which is negligible) has come to the point where its become incredibly negative on how it treats employees. Hint Hint** ask how bad their attrition rate is, most people that are working there now have less than 1 year at Zymo Research because the turn over is so incredibly high. Over the past year a mass exodus of knowledge from upper management and so on has left because even they too were fed up and found better options, happier cultures. Management being blinded by greed is an incredibly accurate statement here. Its got to the point where its so bad, a myriad of products dont perform adequately as they should (blatant lies can be seen through some of the fake smiles there) . I feel bad for the QC team and marketing who are up to their neck as there are so many fundamental issues. Poor communication all around with multiple people either involved and causing bottlenecks or no one understanding responsibilities and roles. People here will LOVE to create more issues and problems by chiming in with their two cents. Please if you value your mental health and long term goals DO NOT WORK HERE. It’s a recipe for disaster and stagnation. There are some great peers that you will get along great and the work life balance is okay I guess.

Pros

Some really nice and smart coworkers who you will learn alot from. Good place to pick up experience quick if you're fresh out of school.

Cons

Very low pay, limited flexibility (you get 5 days of sick leave total for a year, and there's no WFH option at all). Everyone who's been here for longer than a year is very busy with all the projects they're being asked to do. CEO has no business direction, and blames everyone else around him (aka upper management) for not having one, then upper management blames everyone else for not having a clear direction. It's a vicious cycle. A lot of senior management just got laid off (think COO, CMO level). Not sure they'll be able to stay afloat for much longer.

Zymo Research Response

Thank you for your feedback. We are sorry to hear you had a negative experience working at Zymo Research. Zymo Research is dedicated to employees’ health and positive well-being. Zymo Research is extended California’s 2022 COVID-19 Supplemental Paid Sick Leave until March 31, 2023, whereas many other companies ended this benefit on December 31, 2022. In an added effort to keep our employees COVID free, there was flexibility with WFH for employees with applicable job functions. Unfortunately, because Research Associates at Zymo Research work heavily in the laboratory, there is limited option to WFH. Zymo Research has been led by Dr. Larry Jia, CEO and President, for the past 29 years. Under his leadership, the company has grown from a small, garage rental into an internationally recognized biotech business that serves scientists around the globe. At Zymo Research, we pride ourselves on fostering a collaborative and innovative culture where all employees are encouraged to share their ideas and provide feedback. We believe that this approach leads to the best possible outcomes for our customers, collaborators, and partners. We are grateful for the contributions of our employees, who are the driving force behind our success. We are dedicated to providing them with a supportive work environment, competitive compensation and benefits, and opportunities for growth and development. Thank you for your interest in Zymo Research. We are excited to continue our mission of advancing the field of biotechnology and improving human health through our innovative products and services. To clarify, in our 29-year history, we have never laid off a COO or CMO.
