Pros

Nice time if you are lucky to get in a good team.

Cons

-The company loves to push the whole “we’re a family” narrative—until the numbers aren’t looking good. Then, without hesitation, they lay off 100+ employees. -They blatantly lied about supporting remote work. After the CEO got the idea that being in the office builds a stronger “family environment,” they enforced a mandatory return to the office three days a week for anyone living within a 60km radius. (Groundbreaking stuff, really.) -C-level leadership is essentially making it up as they go—throwing ideas at the wall to see what sticks. Meanwhile, the people below are just trying to keep things running and do their best. -Layoffs are handled quietly at first, and then suddenly they slash 20% of the entire workforce. Two days later, leadership holds a meeting to talk about how “important it is to stick together” at this company. The disconnect is unreal.

We’re genuinely sorry to hear that your experience didn’t reflect the culture we work hard to foster. We know no company gets everything right for everyone, and we take feedback seriously even when it’s tough to read. That said, we’d like to clarify a few points so others reading this get an accurate picture. While layoffs are always painful — and we fully understand the frustration they cause — they’ve only happened twice in our 10 year history. The most recent one did not impact 100 people. It was communicated transparently across multiple internal channels, including a company-wide All Hands, a live AMA with our executive team, and follow-up sessions with individual leaders for each org. Let’s face it: layoffs are a particularly awful experience, no matter the context. But in both cases, we’ve been upfront about the reasons and created space for people to ask questions anonymously or directly. On remote work: commercetools has always been a hybrid company. After significant growth in 2021, we began hearing more from employees who felt disconnected and wanted more in-person time with their teams. Based on that feedback, we introduced a three-day office cadence for those living near hubs. This was not to be more “family-like,” but to be a stronger global team. That decision reflects input from hundreds of people with different needs, working styles, and levels of experience. And while it’s a more structured approach, we haven’t stepped away from the flexibility we’re known for. For example, if someone is navigating health needs, school commitments, or other life circumstances, we continue to make accommodations just as we always have. We may not always get the tone or timing perfect, but we never try to sugarcoat hard moments or push a narrative that doesn’t match reality. We’ll keep showing up, listening, and being transparent through the good times and the hard ones. Thanks again for your feedback, and for the time you spent with us.

Pros

- best people to work with - very relax atmosphere - good work/life balance - until the first lay-off it was a great place to work for

Cons

- salary was low for full-time employees - very sales-oriented - you can see that all-hands are mostly sales and marketing, people in sales are appreciated much more, they have company special events only to celebrate their successes - return-to-office policy 3 days per week - lay-offs despite claiming the results were good - employees are really worried about their future

Thank you for sharing your experience, and for recognizing some of the things we’re most proud of — our people, culture, and flexible working environment! We’re glad those aspects stood out during your time here. We’d like to offer some clarity on a few of the points you raised. Our Compensation & Benefits team benchmarks salaries against companies of our size within the broader tech industry to stay aligned with market standards. We also review pay bands annually to identify and address any gaps and most importantly, we share the results of those reviews in our company-wide All Hands so everyone understands how we measure ourselves and how compensation decisions are made. We also aim to celebrate success across every part of the business. Our annual President’s Club is a common tradition in tech companies that recognizes the significant achievements of our sales team especially given their variable, commission-based compensation structure. That recognition is not a reflection of greater value, but of a different model of reward. In parallel, we regularly use those same All Hands meetings and other channels to spotlight the work and impact of teams across engineering, product, design, people, and more. Regarding our return-to-office initiative, we introduced a hybrid model with 3 in-office days per week based on team needs and employee feedback around scaling connection at a global company. That said, flexibility remains an important part of our culture. If someone has caregiving responsibilities, appointments, or other personal needs, we continue to support individual arrangements just as we always have. Thank you again for your thoughtful feedback and for the time you spent as a commercetooler!

Great place to work

Pros

Great team to work with, and a great product!

Cons

At the time, they were having a hard time finding a way to compete with the monolithic solutions, even with their acquisition of Front End. They've recently partnered with Optimizely though, and I think that may help them tell a larger story. This company is leading the MACH alliance, but that has had a negative name in the industry recently due to the gate keeping, and the fad sort of dying out. That being said, it's a solid product with a great future, if they can find their footing again.

Thank you for the kind words! We’re glad to hear you had a positive experience with the team and believe in the strength of our product. We appreciate you taking the time to share both the highs and areas for improvement. A quick note on one point: contrary to the perception that we’re struggling to compete with monolithic solutions, the majority of our customer growth actually comes from businesses moving away from those very systems, including homegrown architectures. Since acquiring Frontastic in 2021, our ARR has more than doubled. And, we’ve continued to evolve our offering in line with what modern enterprises need: technology that allows them to adapt, respond, and innovate — not just today, but for the long term. The MACH Alliance has played a role in pushing that vision forward across the industry, but for us, it’s never been about the buzzwords. It’s about building a product that helps real businesses solve real problems. We also appreciate your note on management. Mentorship, empathy, and inclusion matter deeply to us, and we’ll take this feedback to heart as we continue investing in how we support and grow our people. Thanks again for your feedback and for your time at commercetools!
