Pros

I absolutely loved working at ct (commercetools), the people are amazing to work with, the culture was fun and collaborative, and the salary/benefits were great too! Great work life balance too.

Cons

Gradually since the new CEO started in the summer of 2024, the company is progressively moving it's operations over to the US. This has led to a shift in culture and leadership mindset.

Reading reflections like yours means a lot, especially from someone who spent years helping shape our culture. Four years is no small stretch, and we're grateful for the impact you made and the feedback you’ve shared! We’re glad to hear that the people, culture, benefits, and flexibility stood out to you during your time here since that is the kind of employee experience we work hard to build and protect. That said, we’d like to clarify one important point: commercetools remains a truly global company, and Europe continues to be the heart of our operations. Our founders, chief people officer, chief technology officer, and newly appointed chief product officer are all based in Europe. While we’ve welcomed leaders in the U.S., including our chief customer officer, the majority of our hiring and existing talent is still Europe-based. We’re growing globally, but not shifting entirely away from our roots. On the topic of due diligence, we hear you. Startups operate in a world where thoughtful planning and iteration have to coexist. That’s why “Adapt Boldly” is one of our core values—we’re not here to preserve the status quo, but to challenge it. Sometimes that means experimenting and learning as we go, always with the goal of creating real value for our customers. Scaling a global business comes with bumps along the way, and we’re not afraid to acknowledge and improve through them. Thanks again for being part of commercetools' journey.

Pros

- Fast-paced and highly dynamic environment - Success in your role requires strong agility and adaptability - Supportive and approachable management team

Cons

I don’t believe commercetools is unique in facing certain organizational constraints. However, there are areas within top management that would benefit from improvement. Emphasizing data-driven decision-making, increasing transparency, and actively involving employees in key decisions can unlock more of the company's potential. Empowering the many smart and capable individuals across the organization will go a long way. Additionally, some long-tenured employees have developed toxic behaviors that negatively impact the work culture. This issue deserves attention to ensure a healthier, more collaborative environment.

Thanks for sharing such thoughtful feedback. It’s great to hear you’ve felt supported by the team and have found the environment dynamic. This is something we care deeply about maintaining, especially as the company grows. You’re absolutely right that while we do make data-informed decisions, the pace of change has picked up. Being able and equipped to pivot quickly is critical, and we know there’s more we can do to support teams through that kind of agility. We also want to acknowledge your point about some long-tenured behaviors negatively impacting the culture. That’s not something we take lightly. We’re in a moment of real change and if we ignore these dynamics, we miss the chance to shape the culture we all want and need moving forward. If you’re open to it, we’d really appreciate any more detail you’re willing to share anonymously. It would help us understand what’s happening and where to focus. https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSccEMSB-pWRZA5wL3IyvB-JY8bnyAi2RxJ9HqMpnq7EcKX2wg/viewform Thanks again for speaking up!

Pros

Used to be a great company to work for with competent management.

Cons

Commercetools CEO has made one poor financial decision after another, decisions that don't make any sense and defy logic. This is proved by the fact that commercetools recently had to layoff a large amount of people because they've lost so many clients and can't get new ones. They've had several really bad quarters recently and and have been overtaken by competitors. The layoffs will most likely continue unless major changes are made at c-level. Only work here if you are desperate and looking for short-term employment.

Layoffs naturally create uncertainty, frustration, and even anger — emotions we fully recognize and don’t dismiss. But it’s also important to lead with facts. Our recent workforce reduction was not driven by client losses. In fact, our customer retention remains strong, and we continue to work with some of the world’s leading enterprises. What has become more difficult — across the entire B2B SaaS industry — is winning new business in a slow and cautious market. This is not unique to commercetools, and the industry-wide nature of these challenges is evident in both competitor layoffs and public earnings reports. We’ve always been open about our ambition. In some years, that ambition has fueled incredible momentum. In others, market conditions have made it harder to grow at the pace we’ve aimed for. That’s a tough reality, but it is also the truth. Lastly, while comparisons are inevitable, it's important to clarify that companies mentioned in this review operate with very different business models, customer types, and organizational structures. commercetools has always focused on the enterprise segment, and drawing one-to-one comparisons with companies that serve entirely different markets and operate on a different scale doesn't reflect the full picture. We remain committed to building a sustainable business and continuing to support our people and our customers through whatever market conditions lie ahead.
