Pros

Flexible working hours, home office

Cons

I experienced the worst quality of management here. In my opinion, this is a place for those like staying in their comfort zone. They want pleasers, not challengers. From joining uninvited calls, "who is your boss?" threats to sharing my private info with others without my consent, there are a number of red flags about their low work ethics. I think the real problem is the environment where people allow these behaviors from leaders. Yet, they call you "friend" and "family". I found it creepy. No diversity. They think it only means nationalities. They may look family friendly but it doesn't mean they accept other lifestyles. Not a place for LGBTQ, for example. No inclusion. There is a hierarchy between roles and teams. Some groups have more power, making decisions without insight or proper research, not listening to experts, ignoring others ownership. They keep making wrong decisions based on their gut feelings and narrow views. Some work during sick leave. It won't happen if a truly good employer. Also, I don't believe such work have good quality and true care for customers. I am very happy to be out now.

Dear former commercetooler Thank you very much for your feedback and the time you took to express your thoughts on your time at our company. I am very sorry to hear that you experienced your time at commercetools in this way. This is absolutely not the culture we built or mindset we stand for. We are working hard to ensure we invest in managers and leaders who allow and encourage their teams to continuously challenge thoughts and ideas so we will in fact not stay in the comfort zone but strive to improve and grow as a company but also personally. I am particularly sorry to hear about your feelings in regards to diversity and inclusion as well as feeling commercetools is not a place for LGBTQ. We built our company culture on trust and openness and want our colleagues to feel safe at commercetools in every way, professionally and personally. As I said - what you described in your review is the opposite of what we stand for and what we believe in. I would greatly appreciate it if you got in touch with me directly via employerbranding@commercetools.com so I can learn more about your experience and see where we can and need to change and improve. Thank you in advance and we wish you the best for your future. Maike Hartung Employer Branding Manager

Poor long-term organisational planning

Pros

- Flexible working - Decent Pay - Originally, this was a 3.5/4* company, but it has gone downhill since 2022 in terms of culture and work

Cons

- Two rounds of layoffs in twelve months - Lack of clarity in decisions and priorities by managers - RTO (3-day), a strategic repositioning, but difficult for those working remotely to feel valued and harder to connect with their team - Lack of 'real' transparency around evolving business strategy, leading to positions being unexpectedly eliminated (rather than the decision being made across teams) - High stress, lack of decision-makers, leaving people with constantly changing priorities or waiting for work priorities to be approved

It’s fair to say that the company has gone through significant change as we’ve adjusted our strategy to match where the market and our customers are headed. Despite being difficult to make, the recent decisions were intended to set the business up for long-term stability within a changing market with different priorities, rather than short-term comfort. That doesn’t make the impact any easier for those affected. One of the reasons we invested heavily in our 2026 roadmap and shared it as we normally do was to be transparent about where we’re going, how teams connect to that direction, and what success looks like going forward. That work was meant to reduce uncertainty. For distributed teams, staying connected and feeling included takes real effort. We’ve put structures in place to support remote employees, including dedicated employee experience programs and virtual connection spaces like commercecoffee, but we know those don’t fully replace the feeling of day-to-day proximity for everyone. Ultimately, the way we operate today reflects a more focused and execution-driven environment. We know that this direction won’t be the right fit for everyone, especially for those who valued earlier ways of working, and we respect that perspective. We appreciate you taking the time to share your experience. It helps us reflect honestly on what’s working, what isn’t, and how we continue to evolve.

Toxic culture

Pros

commercetools was a great place to work until 2023, after which the culture and overall experience significantly deteriorated.

Cons

Leadership within the People team demonstrates clear favoritism. Employees who do not align with internal politics or participate in the prevailing toxic culture are often terminated without clear or transparent justification.

Thank you for sharing your feedback with us. It’s no secret that commercetools - and the industry in which we operate - has undergone a lot of change. We recognize that not everyone will be comfortable with the path we are taking, but every decision has been made to ensure the long-term health and stability of the company, and subsequently, our employees. It’s important to note that terminating employees who do not align with our culture is not, and has never been, a company practice. When we have to make difficult employment decisions, the only factors are the performance of the individual and the impact of their role for our next phase of growth. We wish you the best of luck in your next chapter.
