Thanks for sharing your thoughts, and for being a commercetooler! We’re glad to hear that you value the access to a variety of tools - commercetools is, and always has been, a tech-first company, so it’s great to hear that you have that experience. We understand that there have been many changes over the last 18 months as we’ve aligned our internal systems and processes to match the evolution of the commerce landscape; those changes can take some time and space to adjust to, and while they aren’t always easy decisions to make, we are confident that will help ensure we are in the best position to succeed long-term.

Pros

Nice time if you are lucky to get in a good team.

Cons

-The company loves to push the whole “we’re a family” narrative—until the numbers aren’t looking good. Then, without hesitation, they lay off 100+ employees. -They blatantly lied about supporting remote work. After the CEO got the idea that being in the office builds a stronger “family environment,” they enforced a mandatory return to the office three days a week for anyone living within a 60km radius. (Groundbreaking stuff, really.) -C-level leadership is essentially making it up as they go—throwing ideas at the wall to see what sticks. Meanwhile, the people below are just trying to keep things running and do their best. -Layoffs are handled quietly at first, and then suddenly they slash 20% of the entire workforce. Two days later, leadership holds a meeting to talk about how “important it is to stick together” at this company. The disconnect is unreal.

We’re genuinely sorry to hear that your experience didn’t reflect the culture we work hard to foster. We know no company gets everything right for everyone, and we take feedback seriously even when it’s tough to read. That said, we’d like to clarify a few points so others reading this get an accurate picture. While layoffs are always painful — and we fully understand the frustration they cause — they’ve only happened twice in our 10 year history. The most recent one did not impact 100 people. It was communicated transparently across multiple internal channels, including a company-wide All Hands, a live AMA with our executive team, and follow-up sessions with individual leaders for each org. Let’s face it: layoffs are a particularly awful experience, no matter the context. But in both cases, we’ve been upfront about the reasons and created space for people to ask questions anonymously or directly. On remote work: commercetools has always been a hybrid company. After significant growth in 2021, we began hearing more from employees who felt disconnected and wanted more in-person time with their teams. Based on that feedback, we introduced a three-day office cadence for those living near hubs. This was not to be more “family-like,” but to be a stronger global team. That decision reflects input from hundreds of people with different needs, working styles, and levels of experience. And while it’s a more structured approach, we haven’t stepped away from the flexibility we’re known for. For example, if someone is navigating health needs, school commitments, or other life circumstances, we continue to make accommodations just as we always have. We may not always get the tone or timing perfect, but we never try to sugarcoat hard moments or push a narrative that doesn’t match reality. We’ll keep showing up, listening, and being transparent through the good times and the hard ones. Thanks again for your feedback, and for the time you spent with us.

Pros

It used to be a fine place to work but that was some years ago now and it’s taken such a nosedive it’s almost unrecognisable.

Cons

Toxic workplace culture. Many people suffering with work-related stress & no support given to those folks. The worst CEO bar none I’ve ever encountered (I have 30+ years professional experience in tech.) C Level and leadership who do not care about their teams inc. those folks who work in the People department. People are reduced to a number on a spreadsheet. No human approach taken these days. Regular layoffs. The company lacks stability and is no longer a serious outfit. No respect for boundaries or balance. Employees are expected to work around the clock with little time for family or personal interests. Continuous withdrawal of company benefits, sometimes without even notifying the employees. Nobody wants to be there anymore but in a poor economic climate people need a pay check.

We’re sorry to hear how strongly this experience landed for you, especially after spending many years at the company. It’s never easy to see a place you once cared about change in ways that feel misaligned with what you valued. We want to clarify a few points while still respecting your perspective. Over the past year, we made adjustments to only one benefit, and we agree that the communication around that change could have been handled better. That feedback is fair, and we’ve taken it seriously. Along with this adjustment, we also introduced vital new benefits in our core locations in 2025. We also want to be clear that working “around the clock” is not an expectation we set. As a global company, collaboration across time zones is part of the reality, but boundaries and balance matter to us. When concerns like this are raised, we want the opportunity to address them directly. Like many companies in the tech industry, we made difficult workforce decisions in 2025 as we aligned more closely with evolving customer needs. These decisions were about direction, not financial instability, and not a reflection of the commitment or effort of our teams. Supporting employee wellbeing remains important to us, and we offer resources to help with both personal and professional stress. We offer a Global Employee Assistance Program (EAP) that provides mental health resources and support to every employee, wherever they are. Through our partnership with OpenUp, employees can access confidential 1:1 sessions with licensed psychologists, mental health check-ins, and practical tools to support wellbeing, resilience, and everyday life challenges. We offer other top of the market benefits like our extraordinary parental leave program, personal learning budget, and other location-specific benefits. We appreciate you sharing your experience and wish you the best moving forward.
