Pros

There are a some incredibly intelligent, hardworking, and kind people that work at ecobee. I have a lot of respect for these people and had a great experience learning from them and working with them. In my two years at the company, I saw a lot of growth in the CEO (Stuart Lombard) both professionally and personally. I believe the company can course-correct but needs a management shakeup.

Cons

Please keep in mind that my experience is particular to the marketing team within ecobee and not necessarily reflective of all teams within ecobee. - The marketing leadership does not have the experience necessary to quickly and efficiently make the right decision and empower employees to do great work. Unfortunately this leads to lots of unnecessary meetings, roadblocks, and micro-management (second-guessing) that can be frustrating. - The marketing team within ecobee has a very high turnover rate and has challenges filling vacant positions. This is an important consideration because the lack of resources is a common challenge in getting your job done and doing it well. - Too much of the work you are assigned is unrelated to the job you sign up for. This is partially related to the problem mentioned above (lack of proper resourcing). - While the company wants to be great and do great things, due to organizational inefficiencies and lack of company wide project management and processes, progress is very slow. - ecobee does annual reviews where employees can give feedback on what's working and what's not working. The company does not make efforts to act on any of this feedback. - The company's Director of HR left and was not replaced, which is a big concern considering ecobee has over a hundred employees. As for the company as a whole, keep the following things in mind: - ecobee generally does not give raises or bonuses. I did get a raise while I was at ecobee, however, I was told that this was an exception to the "rule". - ecobee does not have RRSP contributions in place, or pension/retirement/401K plan. - There is a 3-month probationary period before your health coverage kicks in.

Don't fall for their lies

Pros

Talented people Free snacks Good product

Cons

Passive aggressive, unorganized, inconsiderate marketing managers that like to micro-manage and will treat you like a child. The recruiter for this company outright lied about the nature of the work, potential for advancement and ability to work from home twice a week. Don't fall for it! Other departments seem to have it figured out, but marketing is a mess. No planning, no strategy, everything is reactive and a last minute rush. You simply cannot do qualify work like that. Don't waste your time if you want to work on meaningful projects and advance your career. But, if you don't believe me, just ask them how many people from marketing have quit (even without having another job!) in the last 12 months. That should tell you everything. Also, sometimes when people resign and give their two week notice, the managers will just ask them to leave that day. Talk about petty and unprofessional.

Thank you for your feedback and I am genuinely sorry we didn’t achieve our own goal of being a fulfilling place for you to work. Throughout our interview process we aim to be authentic about the joys and challenges of working at ecobee, and on the marketing team in particular, and I apologize that you feel misled. Many would attest to how rigorous and genuinely reciprocal, the interview process is. Working on the Marketing team is exhilarating. At times, it is akin to building a plane as you fly it. We don’t have a ton of process, but that also means there isn’t much bureaucracy and we get to forge new ground. Do I have a bit more grey hair? Yes, but what a rush! We take strategy and planning seriously and in the past year, we’ve implemented better tools to define success, refine our strategy and plan our work. We regularly measure our impact on customers, brand and business, and adjust course along the way based on data and feedback. But on this journey – and it is truly early days for this fast-moving sector – unpredictable opportunities emerge that are outside of the plan, and we seize the exceptional ones. This can require a heroic effort, but we typically achieve heroic results. So it is important to know that both things are true: we can be both fast and slow. If you embrace this paradox, then ecobee is right for you. We don’t claim to have it all figured out. But we created the world’s first smart thermostat in 2009. We are competing against the world’s largest company now. In the first year of ecobee3’s launch, we became the #2 brand in North American retail by dollar share. We are underdogs, but we are mighty as hell, and we love what we do. We’re learning every day and endeavour to better yesterday’s best. We know it takes a special kind of team to thrive in this environment, and we’re sad that it wasn’t for you; but we wish you and everyone who has helped us along the journey, only the best.
