Everyday has become Take Your Child to Work Day for CZIers as we continue to work from home. While kids are a regular presence darting in and out on CZI conference calls these days, parents were especially encouraged to give their children a glimpse of their work this week.

Our CZI Lunch & Learns have shifted to Zoom — last week’s focused on the Ear Hustle podcast and the importance of getting first-person stories outside prison walls and into the world where they can help inspire change. “If you hammer policy over someone’s head they might tune out. But, if you put that into a story they might listen.” Earlonne Woods talks about his strategy for the podcast, a partnership with his co-host Nigel Poor and co-founder and sound producer Antwan Williams. Earlonne and Antwan are both people formerly incarcerated in San Quentin prison.

Multi-award winning artist and motivational speaker, Delra Harris, led an eye-opening discussion challenging everyone to uncover the hidden jewels found within one's self. Delra celebrated each person’s unique potential as we closed out Black History Month — providing people with tools to help them connect to their full potential.

Renowned author Daniel Black led an inspiring reading of his novel, “How the African American was born: The Story of the Middle Passage,” as well as an interactive trivia experience for Black History Month. Sponsored by our Building, Leadership, & Knowledge (B.L.K.) ERG, last week’s Lunch & Learn was a great tribute and a powerful reminder of the rich Black American history and culture.

Over 400 CZI team members spread out around the Bay Area to volunteer with eight local organizations. From making blankets and assembling welcome packages to helping renovate a playground, we spent the day learning from local organizations that are supporting our community. We’re excited to continue partnering with these organizations as they make the Bay Area a thriving community for all.
