Congratulations to our team members based in Juneau, who recently accepted an award for Outstanding Project of the Year from the American Society of Civil Engineers for the Captain William Henry Moore Bridge project! This geographically challenging project, part of a realignment of the Klondike Highway, replaced the existing bridge with "roller compacted concrete" embankment that will support the area’s industrial mining truck traffic. Great job, team!
Join us in wishing our own Aaron Fletcher good luck on this weekend’s Olympic marathon trials. He and about 200 other men will face off in Atlanta this Saturday to run 26.2 miles of grueling pavement, and the top three will earn a spot on the Olympic marathon team. Aaron has run his fair share of marathons, with a qualifying time of 2:17:23 and a personal best of 2:14:44. The Anchorage office sent him off with a pizza party (he needs carbs) and a bunch of questions about his training, race strategy, and thoughts on the course. Please join us in congratulating Tamer Avci, from our Helena, Montana office, who recently earned his surveyor’s license in Montana. This comes on the heels of Tamer’s recent licensure in North Dakota, and is the culmination of many years of hard work on Tamer’s part. Way to go, Tamer!
Our Anchorage office really knocked it out of the park with their super CANstruction piece, which honors comics pioneer Stan Lee on one side and Captain America’s shield on the other. Way to go, team! Once the structure is taken down at the end of the month, the cans will be donated to the Food Bank of Alaska, where they’ll be put to good use. Swing by the Dimond Center Mall to check out the final structure before it’s gone!

The American Public Works Association - Alaska Chapter recognized the Glenn Highway and Muldoon Road Interchange Improvements project this past weekend with the Outstanding Large Project award! This State of Alaska Department of Transportation and Public Facilities (DOT&PF) project aimed to resolve capacity, operational, multi-modal, and safety issues at this important intersection in Anchorage, Alaska. DOT&PF selected DOWL to identify the issues and constraints of the existing interchange and develop solutions, which resulted in Alaska's first ever Diverging Diamond Interchange. Irene Malto, Steve Noble, Sam Tyler, and Kelly Kilpatrick accepted the award, but congratulations go out to the entire team on this successful, award-winning project!
The holidays bring out the giving spirit at DOWL – the Salvation Army Angel Tree is up in the Anchorage office and there are already a few presents under the tree for local youth in need. We are proud to support the needs of the communities we live in by giving back.

Last night, the Billings Engineers Club (BEC) held its annual awards celebration. Each year, two awards are given to individuals in recognition of engineering excellence, and the honorees in both categories were DOWL VIPs. The co-stars of the event were Josh Robbins, the Outstanding Young Engineer winner, and Wade Irion, the Distinguished Service winner. Both awards recognize local engineers for their exceptional contributions to the engineering profession and to their community. The BEC has been presenting these two service awards for the past 53 years. Wade and Josh are joining a prestigious circle of winners. We are so proud of them both. Hit 'Like' if you are, too!
Alaska DOT&PF’s Sean Holland and DOWL’s Renee Whitesell shared the stage at the Anchorage Chamber of Commerce Make it Monday forum to give an update on the Midtown Traffic Congestion Relief Planning and Environmental Linkages Study. After the presentation, the project team offered a mini-open house for chamber attendees to get close and ask questions about the draft concepts.
