For the third year in a row, DOWL joined Alaska’s design/build community to support the Children’s Hospital at Providence with the Building Healthy Kids summer toy drive. Studies have shown that building and design toys help develop valuable spatial skills and provide significant cognitive benefits for children of all levels and abilities. They also help inspire future generations of architects, engineers, and contractors! Thank you to our generous staff for filling a box for the kids at Children's Hospital, and thank you to Architects Alaska for spearheading this worthy cause!
DOWL is proud of Anchorage engineering intern Euan-Angus MacLeod who just defended (successfully) his thesis, “Projecting coastal erosion on the north coast of Alaska,” as part of his MS in Coastal Engineering. He was also featured in an article on the same subject in the University of Alaska Anchorage campus newspaper. http://glassdoor.com/slink.htm?key=vQGKh
DOWL invests in its emerging leaders through a two-year program that gives them face time with DOWL’s Board of Directors, a network of friendship with other emerging leaders classmates from around the company, and a close-up look at DOWL’s management methods. Last week, two classes met in Fairbanks, Alaska to present their class projects and learn about and discuss some of DOWL’s business processes. And for fun, the group also found time to float the Chena River on canoes.
Check out Washington Airport Management Association’s newsletter. As an Associate Member, DOWL has the feature article in this summer’s publication. There is nothing better than sharing how our employees go above and beyond for our communities and take care of our clients. The article begins on page three. http://glassdoor.com/slink.htm?key=vQ1Hy
Every year, the Anchorage Office recruits volunteers to clean up our adopted B Street and the nearby Cuddy Park several times throughout the spring and summer. The first cleanup is typically scheduled to coincide with the Anchorage Chamber Citywide Cleanup week. This first cleanup is an important one because a lot of trash is unearthed after the snow melts away. Friday, we had a record 22 volunteers show up to make our surrounding area beautiful!
Congratulations to Clark Milne for receiving the 2018 Alaska Miners Association's Golden Heart Service Award! Alaska’s Golden Heart Service Award honors an individual active in AMA who has exemplified the spirit of advocating for Alaska’s miners. This award recognizes someone who has gone “above and beyond” to provide significant effort, expertise, or funding to an issue impacting Alaska’s miners, has extensive knowledge on mining’s technical issues, and demonstrates a commitment to fostering the long-term viability of Alaska’s miners, for the benefit of all Alaskans. Clark says he was very surprised, but very proud to receive this year’s Golden Heart Service Award. Clark is one of DOWL’s talented Senior Project Managers working out of the Fairbanks, AK office. Congratulations again!
DOWL received word Thursday that our been selected for the Seattle Department of Transportation's Sidewalk and Pedestrian Design Services On-call Contract! This was a highly competitive pursuit, with the DOWL team pulling ahead of many proposers thanks to the team's past performance and first-rate subconsultant roster with many diverse firms. The inventive cover image below didn't hurt either!
Congratulations to the Bend office on their Recognition of Excellence award given to them by the City of Bend for their construction management of the Southeast Interceptor Project! Very well deserved!
Good communication skills are essential to the success of any business. DOWL is helping to ensure its staff has the proper skills by conducting an Advanced Communication training course for select staff members. A huge thank you to Mandi Stanley who provided a two-day written and verbal communication training in our Seattle office.
Seeing the recipients of the annual DOWL Awards has been a wonderful reminder of the great employees at DOWL that continue to make great things happen and the effort they put in on the projects that positively shape our communities. These people and projects exemplify the best in us. Congratulations again to all the winners and their teammates that helped make projects successful. I also want to thank everyone who took the time to prepare nominations for both colleagues and projects. Here is a recap of the 2017 DOWL Awards! ABC Safety Award-Dale Lee, P.E.
