If you’re cold at work, don’t blame building standards. Read more about the narrative of “sexist” building standards in this blog post from our very own Kristina Sing, PE, Seattle-based engineering manager of McKinstry’s energy team.
We’re proud to announce the launch of McKinstry’s blog: Spark. Spark is designed to share our ideas, projects and people. Bookmark Spark (http://glassdoor.com/slink.htm?key=vI82I), to read new content as soon as it’s posted. Current stories include examinations of dubiously “sexist” building standards, the struggle for healthy classrooms and the power of human-centric lighting. Brown County, TX Commissioners recently approved a $5.8 million dollar project with McKinstry to improve several of their county buildings, including the Brown County Courthouse, Juvenile Justice Center, and Agricultural Extension Office. The projects will address aging and inefficient building systems and leverage energy and operational savings to pay for the project over the agreed-upon financing period. For more details see the article in Brownwood News. http://glassdoor.com/slink.htm?key=vI82v
“When I was growing up, Wonder Woman was one of the first women on TV with power. I loved that, and it’s why I always carry around this case with her logo. As an engineer, I consider myself to be saving the world in my own way. I love my trade. Not all women make it, but—to me—engineering is just understanding how things work.” - Kim Wise, McKinstry commissioning engineer, Seattle #ILookLikeAnEngineer
We're honored to announce that John Cannon recently joined McKinstry as our Safety Director for the South Region based in Texas. One of the hardest parts of pursuing the right career path is the loneliness of the pursuit. From deciding a profession to crafting a resume, most of the work is done individually, with little or no outside help other than friends or family. But you don’t have to go it alone. You could seek out a mentor – an experienced worker within your company or profession who can show you the ropes and dispense advice about major career decisions.
Waste audits and waste reduction strategies really do pay off! Our Seattle office’s Green Team did a waste audit (see photos: http://glassdoor.com/slink.htm?key=vI8ni) and “banish the bin” campaign to remove individual employee trash bins in favor of centralized waste disposal areas with compost, recycling, and landfill trash bins. This initiative alone is saving about $20,000 in waste collection costs per year!
Some of our amazing Portland employees participated in the Hood to Coast (HTC) relay race last weekend. The annual Hood To Coast Relay is an overnight, long-distance race starting at Timberline Lodge at the 6,000-foot level of Mount Hood and ending in Seaside, OR on the coast. It is one of the longest and largest relays in the world. This year our team had their fastest score yet! Congrats to everyone who participated!
