Pros

Great and unique IPs in the game industry. Smart colleagues and people that wants to make a difference. Culture that tries to adapt to the Bay Area (food trucks, parties, raffles, flexible work hours, remote work, etc.)

Cons

Many middle and top managers are totally clueless at what they do. They would rather scream, insult and tell you what to do than explain why. Depending on which team you are on, your sense of ownership and pride will be ripped to shred. Your efficiency will go down to almost nothing. Any attempts at doing more than what was requested will be met with fierce resistance, and thinking outside the box is usually frowned upon. Your manager will become your team bottleneck and there is very little you can do about it. Feedback are not welcome and managers become very defensive if you give them. It took me a while to understand that they are actually afraid of being incompetent. The Dilbert principle runs strong in some departments, and sometimes, not strong enough. To be honest, some other teams seem to be better managed on the leadership side, but I can only review my own experience. As an engineer, it felt like such a waste to have this incredible team running at such low efficiency due to the inability of the team leadership to properly communicate the vision, pillars and goals of the team. Instead, everyone was micro-managed from the top which led to frustration to all. The end result is unmotivated and disengaged team. While I wanted to love the company, and I really appreciated my colleagues, management made day to day work impossible to love. During interviews, go with your instincts.

Pros

This is one of the studios that had the shortest amount of "off time" before you were allowed to return as a contract tester. The interview process and written portion work well to weed out people who were not cut out for testing. That coupled with the full week of actual training gave the rest of the team a relatively good idea what type of person was added to the team. Pay was competitive, at the time.

Cons

As a temp tester there was no room for growth, but there was no shortage of promise for growth. Management would set goals as to what they would like to see to consider an individual to be converted to RFT (full time employee). The goals were not unrealistic, however the senior testers and leads would stack the test plans and assignments so that the people who already had full time positions were the only ones who had a fair chance to reach those goals. Towards the end of my last contract with 2K, I was able to meet the criteria set to become an RFT despite having the odds stacked against me. In the end I was told that due to an attendance issue that I had on one of my previous contracts (about 2 years earlier), I was not eligible to apply for the position.

Pros

Great games. 2K really cares about quality. Some brilliant and high performing people. Compensation's fine. Learn a lot if you are on the right team.

Cons

Extremely cliquey. Viciously political. No career opportunities unless you get into the core cliques. That takes tons of late nights, drunk lunches, and awkward parties, but only after you figure out how to get invited to those things. Negative, aggressive, confrontational work environment. Political and process landmines with no training on where those landmines are. Stepping on a landmine is never forgotten and is career-limiting.
