More Cons Than Pros

Pros

The company looks like it invest a lot on manufacturing processes and machinery. Majority of the staff that are employed are good at their job.

Cons

For some reason there seems to be a blame culture between departments. Some members of staff like to shout and get on the defensive instead of working towards a successful outcome to benefit the business. A bullying tactic is used in many cases with multiple people leaving for this reason and jumping before being pushed. There is an 'inner circle' of hierarchy which rule the roost. If you don't fit in then you are down the pecking order and only get told things on a need to know basis. Majority of the company information is spread through Chinese whispers and results in a lot of gossip filtering through the departments. Certain members of staff get preferential treatment from the owners and whatever they say goes. There is noticeable favouritism with there being more to meets the eye from a non-business perspective that isn't rocket science to work out and is the talk of the business. The company is very modern thinking in a new build facility, however the mindset and company ethos is structured around a 1980s rule book. The attitude of 'it worked years ago so if it isn't broken, then why fix it'. The Christmas bonus (if that's what you can call it) seems to be given out at the companies discretion. If you use all of your holiday allowance or take 1 sick day throughout the year, expect your bonus to be in jeopardy. Managers are not trusted to carry out their role. All decisions still have to go through the inner circle. This creates a huge bottleneck for the business which slowly demoralises everybody and drives them to leave. Roles seem to be created and filled to tick a box from a business manual instead of it being something the business requires. The company doesn't try to retain its staff. They boast about only recruiting the best in their sector, however don't offer a competitive package to keep hold of them. Once you hand in your notice the owners will cut all ties with you and blatantly ignore you. A disposable employee attitude is rife with the philosophy that any member of staff is replaceable and that nobody gets one over the Smiths. At certain times the company had people leaving on a daily basis. The company looks to spend a lot of money on new machines and equipment however it is questionable how much is actually used, and is all smoke and mirrors to boast to customers. For a multi-million pound company, their focus is wide of the mark. From sending out emails telling staff they are using too much milk and cannot use it on their cereals, to starting a witch hunt for whoever stole some dishwasher tablets. By the looks of things staff are now being told to add good reviews onto here in order to make the company look better. Don't be fooled. A-Safe expect their staff to receive food when they visit clients, however unless certain hierarchy are involved in internal meetings, then you aren't eligible to order food. HR have an attitude that they are only thereto assist the owners and aren't the quickest or easiest at resolving issues. If it doesn't fit into the 1980s HR textbook then you're hitting your head against a brick wall. A lot of the company guidelines are very old fashioned, like some staff mentality.

Thank you for your detailed review. You make some interesting points. Our record on investment can be seen in our leading-edge technology and manufacturing, and the fact that we have just purchased our third new office facility to become our Innovation and Technology Centre and the fantastic growth we keep delivering year on year. We do need to be clear on a couple of points raised which are factually incorrect. We have paid a Christmas Bonus for all employees every year for 30 years now. If you take all your holiday or have one day’s sickness there will not be any effect on your entitlement to this whatsoever. We monitor and report on staff retention and this is in line with industry norms. That still isn’t good enough for us and we are looking at exit interviews and reasons for leaving, but also running our first employee engagement survey to explore where we can make improvements. We take on board comments from current and past employees and we are constantly seeking ways to improve our employee experience. We are just about to invest considerably in new ways of working, values and culture embedding in the company. What this means to our employees is that they should feel even more involved and a part of the A-SAFE success story.

Pros

-Innovative products -Fast growing business and so new opportunities arise naturally -Owners are driven to continue rapid growth and so reinvest in new machinery, people and training -If you show dedication you can do very well at A-Safe. They have a tendancy to promote from within and this can be cross-departmental. -Introduced flexible weekend extension recently -Flexible start and finish times

Cons

-Benefits packages have started to be reviewed for the better but still a bit to go to match the market such as employers pension contributions being at the statutory auto-enrolment minimum
