Pros
Pay is competitive for most positions. The onsite cafe is great... wait that doesn't exist anymore. The company credit union is wonderful.... oh shoot. The credit union cut ties with Alliant and closed their locations inside Alliant buildings. Ummm, what are other positives??? If you believe words more than actions Alliant is the place for you! Alliant will tell you about how much they value diversity. Alliant will tell you how much they value employee satisfaction. Alliant will preach about a work life balance. Alliant Energy will tell you a lot of things to make you think you want to work for them, and they are very good at saying things.
Cons
Hopefully everyone realizes the glowing reviews of Alliant Energy are low on word count and the reason being it's difficult to write paragraphs with a positive tone when you can't convince yourself of the things you are writing. Leadership is filled with employees who have no idea how to effectively lead. As others have mentioned promotions, pay increases, and growth opportunities are not related to your work ethic or performance, it's related to the relationships you have. Strong leaders who have the best interest of the company and employees are often removed from positions of power or let go entirely and replaced with people who blindly say "yes". The only positive to this action is many people forced out of Alliant quickly catch on at other companies where they flourish and grow. Look at most former Alliant Employees on LinkedIn for proof that Alliant does a horrible job with talent management. Alliant cannot fundamentally determine a path forward and depends on a merry-go-round of consulting firms every two to three years to help guide the leadership team. One thing always remains the same with these consultants, to save money they suggest layoffs which Alliant faithfully follows. Have you seen the movie Office Space? Alliant will terminate employees with decades of work experience and who are sometimes the only person who know how to complete a job to "bring in some entry-level graduates and farm some work" to contractors. Two years later when the experiment fails Alliant will pay a new consulting firm who suggests undoing everything employees have worked towards for the past two years, only to learn a new operation style while half of their coworkers are laid off.
